Hi, First Post....

I am attending Cal Maritime as a 4/c Cadet in the Engine Company. I will be needing a pocket knife for standing watches while our training ship is in port as well as underway. Not 100% sure what use the knife will get but it is safe to assume cutting thick rope will be a must. I currently have a Tenacious with a combination edge however it does need to be sent in for repair. I am interested in having 3 knives in total including the Tenacious, not super worried about weight but more as to blade type (Serrated or Plain Edge or combo) as well as which knife. I have about 150-180 budgeted for the purchase of 2 more knives. My Current thought is a Delica 4 or Endura 4 or 1 of each one being serrated the other being plain.

Any input would be appreciated.

Hi Pantheon and welcome to the forum.

For the environment and type of work you are describing you would be better off purchasing blades in H1 or LC200N. H1 performs extremely well in serrated form so maybe you'd like to try a Salt 2 (I believe they now come with the exact same handle as the Delica).

Instead of buying a second knife I would recommend you buy a Sharpmaker so you can keep your knives in good condition.

And a native salt in lc200n when it's out.

You'd be in under $200 with 2 great knives that won't rust up on ya.

For the type of environment and cutting tasks you describe, your best bet (and my personal recommendation) would probably be the Pacific Salt SE.

I also recommend the Sharpmaker, if you don't already have one. It is a must for sharpening serrated edges, in my opinion.

I agree with the above posts. You can’t go wrong with a serrated Pacific salt and the sharpmaker.

Another vote for the SE Pacific Salt.

The Native 5 Salt would be my second in that budget(the wait is killing me!).

For H1 serrated edge is a must.

Not looking at the costs:
Caribbean
Salt 2
Pacific Salt

Pacific (Endura) is bigger and has a longer edge therefore more useful.

I recommend also at least 1 Sharpmaker rod (gray).

Are you allowed to carry fixed blades, or only folders? If needing to cut large diameter lines on a ship (as opposed to a “boat”) is a primary concern, I’d think you want as long a serrated blade as possible, which would support considering something like the Aqua Salt. I agree with others, the Pacific Salt se should be at the top of your list. I have the Salt 2 se and it seems a bit small for a work knife.

Thank you Guys so much for your input, We carry Folders mainly for ease, I'm also engine(as compared to deck work) so it should not be a habit of cutting large line so I don't think I'll be looking at grabbing a fixed blade. I did purchase a Pacific Salt SE as well as Plain, thinking I might return the Plain and get the Native.

Or a Sharpmaker....

or another Salt adequate for marine environments... :p

Seconding the Peacent. I don't own a hawkbill blade myself yet, but I've heard a lot of good things about how awesome they are for cutting large amounts of rope. That orange Spyderhawk sprint run is still available. And the smaller Tasman Salt is available as well, if you're looking for a smaller Delica-sized hawkbill knife.

Also Spyderco's Rescue series is kind of cool and might be a good choice if you like the sheepsfoot blade style. I think they come in H1 mostly, as well. Or a Sharpmaker, as others have suggested. Or the Native 5 in LC200N when it comes out; LC200N holds a better edge than H1 if the knives are non-serrated.

Ok so got my Pacific Salt SE & Plain today, Honestly not a fan of how either blade feels in my hand. Thoughts on alternatives, the Salt 2 looks nice altho I'm thinking I might just end up keeping the Pacific Salt SE and replacing the Plain Edge with something a bit smaller.

What exactly don't you like about the knife?

Sometimes a knife takes a bit of time to grow on you. I wasn't overly impressed with my Pacific Salt right at first either, but after a month or two of daily use I really came to appreciate the whole design.

The Caribbean SE sheepfoot would probably be perfect, but its more expensive. As soon as they hit Canada I'll be buying one
