Ergonomic Favorite Spyders?

#1

Post by JD Spydo »

I guess the title can mean different things to different people concerning their preferences and what they find to be very useful designs with Spyderco's folders and fixed blades. Myself there are three Spyders that over the years I've found to be my personal "ergonomic favorite Spyders". The three I like the best are the C-60 Ayoob ( G-10 Sprint especially), JD Smith ( PE & SE), Temperance 1 fixed blade ( PE & SE) and to some degree the C-36 Military.

Those are three Spyderco models I've had for years and still use them and favor them over many of the Spyderco models I've owned and used a lot. I use the term "ergonomics" because those three models just seem like they were literally tailor made for my hands and the cutting jobs I use them for and they are just timeless, classic models to me.

So what models do you all like as far as ergonomics, handle fit, ideal blade geometry and ease of usage? Also what types of cutting jobs do you use them for? I'm not really focusing on aesthetics but rather the knife being close to perfect for what you mostly use it for. Your picks can be fixed blades or folders or even Spyderco's specialty type designs if you like. Try to keep to three or four at the most.

The Military, Manix 2 XL, Dragonfly, and Street Bowie all leap immediately to mind. With the exception of the Dragonfly, they are all big knives for big hands. The Dragonfly is a little knife for big hands. :D

Although I have a few Spyders that I think are prettier to look at, the Stretch 2 feels beautiful in my hand. It also slices like a laser and it's built tough as nails. If you ever see me on the trail you'll probably see my Stretch 2 clipped in my right pocket. (of course if you keep searching you'll probably find 3 or 4 more on me too. :D :spyder: :spyder: )

The Temperance 2 is one of my favorites. The contour handle is just really comfy, I would like more handles like this and the Vallotton.

Oh wow Joe!

This may be the toughest ever "favorite" Spyder thread ever!

It'd certainly be easier for me to pick my "least ergonomic" Spyder! ;)

A.T.R. and Adventura seem to be made FOR my hand...

The Dodo seems to have been molded FROM my hand's grip...

In addition, I'll throw in a couple darkhorses that feel better than you'd expect just by lookin at em:

Chokwe & Hungarian! ;)

I like the unexpected ones! Everyone expects or already knows the popular Paramilitary, Military, Manix, Delica, etc. are all winners...

But, like the Chokwe you bring up; as blocky and coffin shaped as it appears, it actually operates and feels great in the hand! :)

I'm betting those are brown and the lighting makes them look a bit lavenderish.
