The .22 Rimfire thread

#1

Post by Sharp Guy »

I mentioned in my introductory thread that I'm a firearm enthusiast and, while I own & enjoy centerfire firearms too, I'm particularly fond of .22 rimfire rifles and handguns.

Member swigert suggested we start a rimfire thread so....here you go! I'm interested in hearing a little about your .22 background and what rimfire firearms you all enjoy owning/shooting. I'll start it off....

I grew up on a large family-owned outdoor shooting facility located NW of Chicago where I worked from my early teens and into my early 30's. We had an awesome plinking range for .22 rifles where I learned the joy of .22 rifle shooting at an early age. I have a lifetime of memories from that place but for some reason one of my fondest memories was practicing offhand rifle shooting on our 100 yd range at a 6" steel swinger with my brother (our gunsmith) on a particularly warm New Years day. I wasn't new to offhand shooting but I found that shooting at a small target at 100 yds was both challenging and rewarding. Later in life that led to my love of smallbore silhouette shooting. I've also competed in a smallbore rifle league, CMP rimfire sporter, and I've shot a few .22 benchrest matches.

Some of my favorite .22 firearms in my collection are a Remington 513T (1946), Remington 541X (custom/accurized), CZ 452 American, Kimber 82G, Ruger 10/22 (slightly modified), Winchester 9422, Winchester 61, Mossberg 152K, Mossberg 400 Palomino, Ruger MKII Gov't. I'm sure I'm missing a couple.

We have three .22LR rifles and a conversion kit for an AR. Two of those rifles are old, inherited guns. I bought a Marlin 795 a few months ago but we've only taken it to the range once. Range fees get expensive at $15 a person with myself and both boys.

One of my favorites. 1946 Remington 513T that was in poor condition when I bought it many years ago. I refinished the stock and had my brother reblue the metal. It's quite accurate providing I feed it high-end ammo.

It's not a .22, but my daughter's gun is a Volquartsen semi-auto in .17 HM2. That thing is super fun. Light, fast, zero recoil, and accurate as a laser beam.

I like the .22 rimfire...Great round..very accurate...can't beat the price to plink and have fun...That said My wife has a Beretta 950BS in .22 short...I own a Wilkerson "Sherry" with a one inch barrel in .22LR, I carry as a third gun an NAA .22 magnum and have a .22 mag Black Widow by the same company and my dad bought me many years ago the last of the Brownings made in Belgium .22LR...it's a bi-centennial model with a gold trigger and carved beavers and such on the frame with a really high grade wood....Great thread!!! Doc:)

Doc that's a beautiful ATD. I'm a big Browning .22 fan, especially those made in Belgium. I don't have an ATD but I do have one of the Norinco copies. They are fun little guns and I hope to get a Browning one of these days. I really prefer plinking with my pistols over my rifles. Here's a shot of the Brownings that I do own.

And here's the Norinco ATD.

I was glad to see mention of a .22 rim-fire thread, I also have a passion for rim-fire rifles particularly Winchester pumps from 1890's up and have been collecting them for many years now. I also have modern rim-fire pieces but the oldies are my favorite.

Here are a few from my collection:

Love all those Browning pistols!! I've shot several and handled many Browning 22's in our gun shop over the years but I've never owned one. I might need to change that one of these days!

Winchester slide actions are sweet! As are the 9422's. I was never a big lever action fan until I took possession of my dad's after he passed away.

Here's my 61 that somebody added a pad and sling swivel to early on. Also a pic of my 9422...

Very nice 61', mine is probably one of the smoothest shooters I have. They just dont make pumps like those Winchesters anymore, feels like that slide is running on bearings.

Per Monocroms request here is my 10/22 take-down with an AGP collapsible stock and TSR200 Tech sights.

I am a fan of punching paper, so air guns and .22 have been my favorites from an early age, however the price of .22 ammo has kept me shooting airguns for the last few years :(

Match grade .177 pellets can still be had for $15/500 no problem, decent .22 is more like $80/500... and that's just for regular quality standard velocity.

I own two .22 firearms, a CZ 452 Training rifle with the basic beech stock and military style ramp rear sight and a Kadet .22 conversion kit for my CZ 85 Combat. Both great shooters.

I also have care of my father's Remington model 12 pump, the barrel isn't great, but it still feeds and fires reliably and the accuracy is surprisingly OK for what the bore looks like!

I only have one .22 anymore, and it's one that I'll never part with. My mother gave it to me, she got it from an old man at a yard sale if I remember correctly, probably 25 years ago or so. It's a Garcia Bronco, which were sold through Sears & Roebuck catalogs in the '50s-60s. That's about all the info I've been able to find on it. Many companies made and sold guns like this and marketed them as train/brush/rabbit/etc guns. There is also a version like this that has 2 barrels, .410 on top and .22 on bottom...I would love to find one of those someday.

It's a single shot, you pull that front trigger to both cock and unlock the barrel, which spins around to open up the barrel where you insert the cartridge. Then you do the same to unload the casing and repeat. There's a lever on the right side that flips up to unlock the barrel from the stock.

I slipped the Yojimbo in there for size reference.

My father had a old Savage 22 Semi-auto that I learned to shoot with. It would fire 22 short, long, and long rifle. It was a big, full sized rifle, with at 22 inch or longer barrel. I grew up around guns and in the mid 1960's ( I was very young ) my father bought me a Winchester 290 Deluxe 22 Rifle. It is the most accurate 22 rifle of any action type I have ever fired. It is a beautiful rifle. I used it a lot, but I was careful with it. It still looks incredible. When we moved, since guns are illegal here (except for the criminals), I had to store it with family members. I hope to shoot it again, one day. I know there are some fine rifles on the market, today, but they do not come close to the fit and finish of those two old rifles.

A little savage 22 long rifle. Restocked, bedded, tweaked & has the threaded muzzle. Nice thing about this one is that it takes the same can as the little Ruger SR22 (a Silencerco Sparrow). Accurate & fun as well. Both very quiet with subsonic ammunition.
