How about a salt mule?

#1

Post by Surfingringo »

I think the mule project would be a great place to introduce and test some new steels for the salt line. How about a lc200n salt? Or one in BD1n? Who knows, there could be a steel out there that offers H1 like corrosion resistance for extreme environments but can reach a higher hardness and have better edge retention than plain edged h1. Seems like the mule team project would be a great way to make some of these steels available and get them into peoples hands for testing. I would love to do some systematic real world corrosion resistance testing on my kayak. I would also be very interested to see some of the cardboard cutters test them for edge retention against steels like h1 and s30v, etc.

I think an H1 mule (or equivalent "non-corrosion" steel) is an excellent idea.

I don't think people realise what they're missing in H1.

Count me in.

Hi Lance,

We plan a Mule Team in LC200N (LC). We already have the steel on hand and w're in the process of adding it to the queue.

I'm also working on 2 Salt designs with LC. G-10 scales. 3-3/4 blade and 4-1/4 blade. Any thoughts on what type of clip you'd like to see for function in your kayak?

That's lots of great news Sal! Out of curiosity, are you guys able to flat grind that lc200?

I'm not picky about what kind of clip...I like all of Spydercos clips, but it would be nice to have a 4-way placement option. I carry IWB a lot out there and always use a lanyard to slip around my wrist so the ability to carry tip up is a big plus.

Awesome news!

I think this qualifies as a "bombshell". I'll go check and if someone already hasn't posted it then I'll add it.

I would definitely pick one of these up for sure! :)

Well, how about that? :)
Sounds great! :spyder:

Very intrigued now. Don't have any first-hand experience with LC200N yet, but have seen some reviews and plenty of thoughts, including an older thread by Surfingringo about the Tusk I think it was...

Was just going to say a stainless mule seems like a great idea but then was waylaid with a G-10 Salt.

Kinda wish I had more need for a stainless type knife.
On my radar: 110V Military, Police 4 and some sweet Rex 45 Military action.

Newest Spydies: S90v Ti Military, Pacific Salt and a special Kiwi.

Great news guys! Count me in! My vote goes to the wire clip on this one.
But will buy regardless of clip style!

Very excited to read there will be a LC MT blade! Living on an island off the coast of Maine, I've had to come to terms with my tool steels only looking perfect and pristine for what seems like only the first day I get them. It will be awesome to have a high quality fixed blade that I can take out and not have to worry as much about keeping dry. Its not just the salt water the gets to my blades here, I actually think its the salt in the fog/air thats the real culprit. I even got a spot of rust (since taking care of) on my CTS-204P last spring working in heavy fog and never even touching salt water. The two new folders will be very cool to check out as well. Thanks for starting this thread, Surfingringo and thank you Sal and Spyderco.

Another vote for deep carry wire clip on the G10 LC Salt......that would be incredible for a very secure and discreet IWB carry.

I think I said this before but I wonder if Sal would consider naming one the folders the Gringo Salt, or even better, the Salty Gringo. :p ;)

Sorry, just being silly. :D
