What Are the Must have Spydercos for Newbies?

#1

Post by dreadpirate »

So I just started collecting Spyderco knives this past January. I was wondering what you all think are the "must have" for any collection big or small? Here's what I own so far in my collection:

1. Dragonfly 2 in FRN VG-10 steel
2. Native 5 in FRN in S35VN steel (guess S35VN is the only option so far)
3. Endura 4 in FRN VG-10 steel
4. Manix 2 in FRN and S110V steel
5. Delica w/ Titanium handles and Damascus steel
6. Sage 1
7. Caly 3.5 w/ G10 handles and VG-10 steel

Out of these - the Dragonfly, Delica, and Endura seem to me to be the basic 3 knives that run could meet most of your needs. What do you all think? Also - I have all full flat grind (FFG) blades - but maybe a Saber grind might be good to have, esp. for a smaller knife like a Delica.

I think you should add some more taiwan to your collection :)
chaparral and the gayle bradley folder are both incredible knives. You may also way to look into a salt knife if you like fishing or hanging out around water

Rotation:

In my mind, it would go something like this: Paramilitary 2 > Manix 2 (also XL) > Military > Native > Endura > Delica > Sage > Stretch > Caly. That right there will cover the basics.

I'd agree with all this implicitly- and only add on the end a Police (Stainless, full serrated as probably the classic 'expression' of the design), a Harpy (A classic) and a Civilian.....to start with.

I have to suggest a Military. I am more of a lover of the Millie than the PM2, and have added a second to my collection.

I'd also add something like a Tenacious, as they are really awesome and reliable knives to have around.

As stated above, definitely look at some more Taiwan made knives. The Taichung factory produces almost all of my favorites. Their quality is exceptional!

PM2 for sure!
Other than that, the Gayle Bradley folder, a Centofante 3 as a dress knife, perhaps a Stretch and many more in the future! :D
A tiger has claws.
A wolf has teeth.
An eagle has talons.
We, have Spyderco.

I think you have to define what type of collection you want. Is this to be a collection of knives that are used? Then the suggestions above may be exactly what you need. If it is to be a collection to be to show the wide range of knives Spyderco makes then you will need a much broader range of knives. Perhaps it would be a collection of Golden, CO made knives, or just collaborations or tactical knives.

You need a Para 2. Nuff said.

I would say that all Spyderco fans should own the following:

Paramilitary 2, Manix 2, Delica 4, Native 5, Dragonfly 2, Sage (any version), Military.

Same thing I said in your BF thread

Add in to what has already been mentioned:

Yojimbo 2
Domino
Gayle Bradley
a Mule
more variations of the Delica
Ladybug/Manbug

and everyone should have a little SpyderEdge in there somewhere as well!
Going back to Caly.

I do not believe that there is such thing like must have for everyone. I have only knives, which I love or really like. Even at the time, when my "collection' was about twice bigger than now, I didn't have, what many consider "must haves". There are quite a few popular Spydercos, which I do not care, so there is no reason for me to have. Within last couple years I sold about 50 spydies, many of them considered "grails" by others, but not by me. No regrets, may be except ATR.
Just buy, what you enjoy.

I'm not a knife Newbie , but I am a Spyderco Newbie .
I'm not a knife collector , I'm a knife user .
Over the years I've tried to keep it simple by having a Big , Middle sized and Small folder .

So for me , and its only early days .

Big - Resilience
Middle - Delica
Small - Dragonfly
