Thanks for asking.
My axe is 15in from top of blade to end of handle.. Put it in my pack (Osprey Daylite) and have about 1 1/2 to spare at the top/zipper.. I dont carry an axe but do a folding saw.. John :)

Marmot makes some really nice small daypacks. I have one that I love and use often. It's ultralight and ultrdurable. The model name escapes me at the moment.

I ended up getting a Kifaru E&e pack. It's small, in fact a little smaller than I thought but still ok. I was after something smaller than my Samsonite laptop bag .

Noticed nobody in this thread has mentioned Tom Bihn products. I have a couple of their bags and highly recommend them.

For the size you're needing, I suggest you look at:

The Guide's Pack - 31 Liter Volume

or

The Brain Bag - 36 Liter Volume

They can be pricey, but they are fantastic products and you won't be disappointed.

If these are too big, then the Synapse 25 at 25 Liters of Volume is a good one to get as well.

I added a 500 light long pocket to the front of my E&E which is great. It cinches down if empty so overall stays small, but can add 600ci taking the total up to 1600ci or 24 litres.

I use a Gregory Z30. It is cool due to a gap between the mesh panel that touches your back and the pack itself and because it is narrow giving the wearer great balance and is less likely to bump into things.

$90 with free shipping if you wear a large:

Picked up the Kifaru Urban Zippy recently and so far really liking it, seems to be the perfect size for me and quality is the best I've seen so far.

Hey Solid. I've been using a Walmart Outdoor products Vortex 2.0 or 3.0 I don't remember exactly, pack for 3 years. hasn't even had a tear. I got it for I think $35. it has a space for like a camelback bladder or other hydration products. I can fit my Estwing tactical tomahawk in it with ease and it has plenty of smaller pockets for all your smaller objects, Knives, keys, flashlight etc. there is also a medium size pocket where I usually put my first aid kit. I don't know how big your first aid kit is but its a decent sized pocket. Anyway, just thought id add to the info. -Jake-
