Sharpest Out-of-the-Box Spydie You've Ever Gotten?

#1

Post by pmbspyder »

The recent threads on sharpening have me wondering a bit about this question. I wonder if there are any trends (ie seki city knives are generally sharper than Golden, CO knives, etc) in sharpness?

With that in mind, what's the sharpest spydie out of the box that you've ever received? I've had them from all the various manufacturing locations and I have to say that my street beat and my se spyderhawk were nearly hair whittling sharp when i pulled them from their red glossy encasements! The others were definitely sharp too, but those 2 knives really surprised me with their edge

Thanks for reading!

Easily my burgundy Calypso Jr. That thing is so sharp it's scary. Lightly touching it to the skin will almost draw blood.

ZDP-189 goodness.

Well most every Spydie I've taken into my collection has been nothing but satisfactory regarding the edge... however, I'd have to say that the sharpest one I've ever pulled out of a box was my digital S30V Millie... they got the grind on that one **** near polished... not quite but a few passes on some ultra fine rods and it would have been there! It was splitting hairs effortlessly right out the box... gotta love that! In fact, all my Millies came with a similar level of performance. My Para 2 came hair splitting sharp too.

The most dull of all my Spydies out of box was my Spyderco Q... that was not really the greatest, but it was a collection piece anyway. I've since put a razor edge on it as well though.

my zdp189 stretch by a long shot. it had a quite wide relief edge on it but was still that kinda toothy machine edge. it cut like mad though & still does after months of use & i've never sharpened it.

wow lot's of love for the caly 3.5 super blue! interesting to hear some of these replies, i see there's quite a bit of variation.

forgot to mention that a close runner up was my tenacious.

dullest probably was my kiwi 3 stag, that thing couldn't shave my arm if you handed it a razor.

of my few, i'll give that distinction to my orange drop point moran. That bevel is ridiculous. The dullest was my s30v CF chicago. It had a sloppy uneven bevel grind that I had to correct. But now it's a wonderful little biter.

my orignal kiwi for sure, guess due to the thin grind.

Equally well beyond razor sharp were my Blue ZDP Stretch, my Caly 3.5 SB, and my 2 new ZDP Delica FFGs that I received today.
If I have to pick only one .... it's the CSB
