Wow, Boomer. Those scales are really nice! How do you apply the diamond pattern to the G-10? I'd asume by using a mill...

Oh yeah... everything is done on the CNC... save some minor hand wet sanding and edge buffing at the very end.

This one is a gift for my wife, in a traditional Nami style pattern that she really enjoys. Feels great in the hand, too!

Can I ask a question about these aftermarket scales .
Are they a bolt on , one size fits all , or do you have to send your knife to have them fitted to the individual knife ?

Most of the people who make scales have a knife of whatever model that they use to make the scales. No need to ship your knife.

Of course you have to make sure they make scales for your particular model.

About a year ago I disassembled my Pingo to make some scales. I realized that to get the tension just right is very difficult on a slipjoint, so I let the pile of parts sit until this week, as I just got a drill press. You can see that I screwed up the pivot hole and had to fill it with epoxy and then drill it again. It works fairly well now, but I'm still not entirely happy with the tension. Getting the holes lines up just perfect is harder than I had imagined.

I always see people making the handle scale SHAPE and then drill the holes. If you have a blank piece of G10 or wood or whatever, why not drill the holes first and make sure they're where they need to be and then cut out the handle shape according to where the holes are? Seems a lot less risky.

Yeah, I think if I were going to make a bunch of Pingo scales, I'd probably make a template for the holes out of steel so that I could just plop it on and drill all 3 holes nice and easy, with proper spacing and geometry between them already established. My difficulty came from the Pingo scales having "D" shaped holes instead of round holes. Normally I would toss the original scale on top of my material and then drill down through the preexisting holes (dropping a pin in each hole before moving on to the next), but since the Pingo doesn't have round holes in the scales, I drilled the two for the spring/backspacer, then tried to line up the pivot hole. Since I couldn't lower the drill bit all the way down into the hole in the original scale to check my alignment, I did my best to get it centered, removed the original scale (and probably shifted the underlying new scale just the smallest bit in the process), and then drilled. When I tossed the blade in to check, it didn't engage properly. So I filled the hole with epoxy and gave it another go, with more success this time.

I changed it already! Now it looks like this.





The color was a much better coppery-bronze that was very consistent, but the oils from my hand makes it go toward the violet spectrum. Its' an unexpected but kinda cool effect.
