Burgundy Linen Micarta scales for the Spyderco P'kal
A few hours of work this morning and I have new scales for the P'kal! The burgundy linen Micarta is finished to 220 grit for moderate grip. It needs a little time to "wear in" with hand oils and 3-in1 oil, but I like the shade of color so far.
The hardest part of this scale mod was drilling the CBBL slot. I used a 1/4 inch bit in a drill press backed by some scrap wood, but I almost ruined it when the drill bit snagged. Carving the slots for the clip was difficult too--I used a Dremel with a carbide bit.
Let me know what you think! :)

Looks great to me. One day when I have a garage or something I'm gonna have to start modding. How is the width compared to the original?

Thanks guys!
It should be a tiny bit thicker, because the original G10 scales are slightly thinner than the 0.125 micarta scales.Liquid Cobra wrote:Looks great to me. One day when I have a garage or something I'm gonna have to start modding. How is the width compared to the original?

How does the P'kal work as an EDC knife?

Thanks everyone!
Wanimator: Here is a link to a brief review that I did a while back: http://www.spyderco.com/forumII/viewtop ... =2&t=65152" target="_blank
It isn't what I would use as an EDC knife, because the combination of Emerson wave and reverse-grip-only ergonomics make it unsuitable for my type of cutting. YMMV, and I have no doubt that it is exceptional in the arena that it was designed for. :)

Great work G/S!
If you have any micarta left over would you be interested in doing some scales for my PM2? :p

Thanks guys!
Johnnie: I wish, but sadly I cannot make scales for the PM2...I don't know how to deal with the recessed liners.
Holland: Yes, I did. Good job noticing!

As for the Pikal not being an EDC, gotta beg to differ- I find the choils make a great guide for pinch-grip...Mine makes short work of croissants
Warhammer 40000 is- basically- Lord Of The Rings on a cocktail of every drug known to man and genuine lunar dust, stuck in a blender with Alien, Mechwarrior, Dune, Starship Troopers, Fahrenheit 451 and Star Wars, bathed in blood, turned up to eleventy billion, set on fire, and catapulted off into space screaming "WAAAGH!" and waving a chainsaw sword- without the happy ending.

2 year old thread... still great work by GS!
And to answer the bumped question, Meredith, you should definitely be able to find some linen Micarta in Australia. I don't see why it would be difficult, but maybe some of your fellow Aussies on this forum could direct you to a specific source/retailer.
