Synthetic Handle Materials for custom/hand knife makers?

#1

Post by SpyderEdgeForever »

From what you all know, what are some "Non Natural" (natural in this context being stuff like wood, horn, bone, shell, ivory, stag bone, etc) synthetic handle materials that custom and hand knife makers can have access to which do not require large multi-thousand batches of products to be made through injection molds and the like?

I know there are slabs of rubber that are sold, and there is Micarta and treated wood. What else do you know of? Are there plastics and even some form of FRN that custom makers could make use of or do those require factory production?

I have seen G10 scales sold for custom makers.

Most materials that I know of are some variation of what is the typical construction of Micarta and G-10, usually some mixture of a given material held together with resin/epoxy. Kirinite I believe is just some sort of solid resin not mixed with anything other than coloring. C-Tek is resin with a grid of foil or something inside to give it pattern. Their is also G-10 made with rubber layers that make it softer and grippier. AmeraGrip is such a material that a friend of mine has been liking a lot for knife handles.

C-tek and others like them that make the honeycomb pattern. Can be 3D printed or aluminum...

Juma, Elforyn, and the various Raffir composites are all pretty nice.

Lots of good stuff at this (non-knife) site:
