When will seki see magnacut?

#1

Post by hobbyist »

I’m thrilled at the incredible number of new salt models in the latest reveal. Extra thrilled there’s so many in magnacut.

Try as I might, I can’t shake my addiction to seki’s line. The delica/salt, endura/pacsalt, and dragonfly just feel right in my hands.

I would love to see that line in magnacut.

Can this happen anytime soon?

If it happens at all, it could take a while. I’m of the belief that Spyderco has to very carefully consider if they want to introduce Magnacut to their Seki made Salt lineup and effectively kill off their LC200N and H2 Salt Series knives.

Not sure if Magnacut really is better for me than LC200N... actually not even sure if Magnacut is really better than LC200N for everyone who thinks so...

But these are admittedly purely theoretical complete layman considerations (I have not even tried MC yet...).

One thing to consider:
Both Chief Salt and Native 5 Salt come in MC AND LC... One version for exactly the same price as the other.
So ffg Salts can be in the lineup offering each steel variant. Don't know for how long, but perhaps Spyderco sees that LC can do things MC can't and vice versa...?
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

On the topic of Crucible steels in Seki models, I'd also like to see some SPY27 in a Delica/Endura.

This is sort of how i feel. Ill preface this that i only have months of experience with magnacut vs a couple years of hard use on LC. In a real world, really hard use, saltwater environment, it hasnt shown me much that its worth using over my lc200n stuff. Toughness and corrosion resitance are the most inportant things for me in my work knives, and so far MC has fallen below LC in both. Both fall short of my favorite steel, H1/2 SE. In my experience MC has been more prone to edge damage too. That said, MC has a clear advantage in edge retention. Stuff stays sharp a good while, and is my #1 choice for most less abusive cuts. (Boat shrink wrap, cardboard, etc) I really like MC, its a fantastic steel. Among the best i think. I just dont like it enough to replace LC, and god forbid H2.

To answer the op's question and not derail too much. I remember seeing Sal say seki would get magnacut eventually in some thread a few weeks back. I think we will see it eventually.

I would love to see a sprint run of the Dragonfly in Magnacut steel and a Zome handle from Spyderco!

It used to be difficult for spyderco to get seki to use steels not standard available in Japan itself. I believed they even refused it many years ago. But the couple of years it seemed they changed theyre mind a little in seki since we did see other steels even s30v in japanese spydies. So magnacut could be used in seki. But i do not see it replace the other salt steels it will be more of a sprint run type of deal i think.

A MagnaCut Delica only makes sense. It should have been done by now.

they just started getting the golden models we've been waiting for out. 😂 it'll probably be a few reveals down the line.

I don't know sure that I'd prefer Magnacut, so I'm in no hurry. I still am very happy with H1.

I think Spyderco is a little slow in their MagnaCut releases. Every other knife maker seems to already have a line of them.

But is the way they do their MC as good as Spydercos?
(Honest question, I don't know. It's just that Spyderco apperantly always take their time to get the best out of a steel).

I am very excited for some Seki Magnacut, but I don’t think there’s much danger of killing off H2 or LC200N. They’re all very different steels.

I’m stoked to have more options in the salt series! With Magnacut maybe we’ll see more people getting into carrying salt knives for EDC, which I hope will only be to the good of the whole salt family. 🙂
