Post up your Rit dye projects..
Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
Spill it Mr J! How did you do that? Repurposed white scales? They look weathered and like twisted strained material. Very cool!

White scales to start. Twisted cotton string tightly around each scale. Dyed with royal blue and a hint of navy blue. Then sanding with 600-1000 grits to perfection.

So good.
Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
Thank you to all who have added to the wealth of information here. After reading as much as i could here about dying, i finally decided to give it a try on my magnacut native salt. Was going for a more burnt orange, and happy with the results for my first try. Might have to try a couple more.

Try to do it with scarlet red. It will look more burnt orange not like Spydercos sprint orange but like the crayonWindward wrote: ↑Mon Dec 04, 2023 5:23 pmThank you to all who have added to the wealth of information here. Wasn’t sure how the pakkawood would take the dye. Worked great!

Had some extra scales, so I decided to take a swing at purple digi cam.
In hindsight I wish I had gotten a lighter shade of purple dye, but It's definitely an improvement for me.

Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
So this is all definitely more art than science. I tried my second set of scales, which turned out grey/blue (saving these for when I finally get my hands on a PM2 Tanto). And then I did my gen 1 military, which is less purple. I'm not mad at any of them. But I'm having a hard time with not being in control of what's happening.

Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
How much dye are you supposed to use? I have some white scales in the bath and they've been there for 50 minutes and they're really not taking up much color. White scales with rit racing red dyemore. I started with the double concentration they say for polyester, and at 25 minutes I more than doubled that.
Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
FRN scales for me take color in seconds. odd.
I just ordered some sage. thinking about dying my stretch xl sage then fading the ends something darker.

I usually go with 7 parts water 1 part dye. But, have you heated the dye? It should be simmerimg. I've dyed yellow salt scales with rit dye more Racing Red in less than a minute. Dark red in less than 5.Chumango wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 4:19 pmHow much dye are you supposed to use? It is simmering on the stove, so it is hot. I was using less than half of what you use so I just added some more dye to the pot.
Maybe FRCP scales take more time and dye than FRN.

Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
I usually do them in those little aluminum disposable loaf pans, and double boil them in a larger stock pot. The boiling water in the stock pot usually keeps my dye pans like 200ish degrees. I Fill them up like 3/4 full of water with a splash of vinegar and add 6 capfuls of dyemore. Never had a problem. Only issue i had once some scales i didnt clean enough, dye wouldnt adhere. Cant hurt to pull them out and give them another good scrubbing with with isopropyl alcohol.Chumango wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2023 4:19 pmHow much dye are you supposed to use? With roughly 1 oz dye to 7 oz water it is now taking color, but it is definitely not a 5 minute thing. It will probably be an hour at this concentration. A little dish soap but no vinegar - the bottle and the web site don't mention vinegar for DyeMore.
