Now I know why my favorite Benchmade models are the ones with a Spydiehole.

I do find both BM and Hogue axis-type locks easy to shake open, unlike a backlock.

it can happen with compression locks too. got poked by a para 2 when I reached into my pocket - still got the scar.

I went years refusing to buy detent based locks. glad I gave them a second chance though. The yojumbo is a really nice comp lock. very stiff detent so it never feels like it'll open itself, even carried tip up IWB. But the detent isn't so stiff opening feels bad at all.

I try to only buy detent based models in person. They can vary a lot. I bought a 52100/CF Military I wouldn't even carry because the detent was so weak, but I've had Millies I sold because they were so stiff to open. Luckily my S30V DLC second is in the goldilocks zone.

CBBL are really nice for their combination of smooth opening action and self close. But when they have bad lock stick like my 4V Manix XL it can discourage me from wanting to carry the model.

If you do not like something, don’t buy, or recommend.

Doesn’t get better than the self close bias on spyderco lock backs. I never worry about them opening in my pocket.

Agreed.

I like my (few) Axis lock knives, but you do have to watch out. Their blade retention is not very good. It’s the flip side of that easy deployment.

I haven’t read this entire thread, but backlocks are by far my favorite with liner locks coming in second.

Yet when stuff like keys gets caught in the spydie hole it may get unpleasant pretty fast. After a minor incident a few years ago I stopped carrying a Ladybug on my keys for exactly that reason. But that is for a different discussion.

Good to know! I carry a tiny opinel (i think no.2 or 1?) on my keys. Never a problem with that since it’s a friction folder

I wish the PM2, the Delica and the Native 5 were linerlocks. Liner locks are the second lock I prefer next to a framelock.

Backlocks I agree with you, I don't understand how they're still a thing.

No liner locks for me. I do not like them too much. The only (1) liner lock I have is an Emerson. Sold my Spyderco Military liner lock.

Back locks, lock backs, frame locks for me. May try others if they appeal to me.

I dunno, maybe being fully ambidextrous, easy to operate one handed even with gloves on, not requiring fingers in the path of a closing blade, tough to unlock by accident, being one of the best locks at keeping a closed knife closed, being an old and well understood design most companies have decades of experience with.....

A troll thread with eight pages of responses!
Eight pages, and the OP was only half right.
If he hadn't got it so dreadfully wrong with the back locks,
it might have been sixteen pages.

Well, Vivi has replied perfectly already, but let me add to his points:

- Backlock helps with ergos (no comp. lock/linerlock cutout)
- Backlock imo has the most good methods of being closed one handed
(- Backlock is the way to go if one wants to design a really thin locking folder)

I agree with you though that linerlocks can be really good too, and yes, a linerlock PM 2 would be a real improvement for me personally

Love lockbacks, as a lefty, the qualities of it being fully ambidextrous, practically completely unobstructs the handle ergos, and the self close tension make it the best lock out there for me personally!
