I recently bought a couple of Yojimbo 2's, as shown here. I like them a lot for their ergos and looks. (Not into self defense etc...)
How strong is that tip for EDC though? Do many break? Just wondering how strong it is before i start slicing open all manner of every day packages and boxes... Anyone broken their tip really easily?
Can you break down a box with a typical utility knife without breaking the blade? If so then this shouldn't be a problem. If you plan on prying or using it as a screwdriver or scraper, probably won't end well. I did chip the tip off one, though I have no idea how or even when it happened, I just noticed one day that about 1/16 inch was gone from the tip. I ground down the spine to meet the edge again to fix it.
if you drop it tip down on a hard surface or abuse it, you might break it, but it's plenty strong for edc cutting tasks.
it's funny, i was just thinking about this question coming up occasionally this morning while i was cutting something with my wharncliffe delica. that tip is so much finer than my other edc knives. i tried the same cuts with my manix and the manix wasn't able to perform as well. it's plenty sharp too, but you can't beat physics.
anyway, i suspect that we worry too much about the frailty of our knife tips. if we use them as cutting tools instead of screwdrivers and prybars, they are fine.
eta: those are some nice looking knives right there. i've been thinking about a second yojimbo. i had a hard time deciding between satin and dlc. i ultimately went with satin and i love it, but now i kind of want a dlc too.
I thrash my Yojimbo and Yojumbo at work and they are plenty tough (so long as you don’t do anything that isn’t cutting things). I use mine mainly working on fruit trees (they make and exceptional grafting knife), and have hit all manner of weirdness embedded in bark with no ill effects a bit of sharpening can’t remedy.
My question for the OP is - have you tried a Yojumbo yet? It’s quite the knife

The Yojimbo 2's tip should be durable enough for EDC tasks unless you are especially careless with your tools or your EDC tasks encompasses things like prying or using your folding knife to make starting holes in hardwood for screws.
I've been using a vanilla Yojimbo 2 (S30V blade) as my primary work knife for several years at this point. Haven't broken the tip despite the occasional mishap like hitting the blade on a wooden pallet or a steel beam. The tip probably won't survive being dropped point-first on a concrete floor from chest height (I've broken the tips of both an S30V & an S45VN Para Military 2 that way, as well as an N690 non-Spyderco knife), but not very many folding knives would survive something like that unscathed.
When I use my knives I occasionally drop them. When I dropped my current EDC serrated UKPK it landed on the 'edge' and one of the teeth snapped off. I've owned a half dozen or so Yojimbo 2s since they came out and I broke the tip off of 3 of them, two were dropped on the floor and 1 bumped (hard) into metal. I made sure not to get a coated Yojimbo, all of mine were satin and looked fine after I ground the spine down to meet the edge.
maybe i'll buy a second one when i can get a trainer.
