Re: Wandering about in the woods
It's been about four months since I posted last. The winter has been long up here in the northwest and I haven't been out and about much. I did get out a couple of days this week to wander, however, and I took few photos to share.
Sunday I drove up to Paradise to check out how much snow was still there and made a few stops on the way.
This shot is at the mineral springs in Longmire. The PM2 is sitting on the rim of an old mineral bath.
Further up, the road crosses over Van Trump Creek.
Here's another creek closer to Paradise.
We had sun, rain and even a little light snow on our way and finally made it to Paradise. There wasn't much to see here besides the snow and clouds. Here' a shot of the one exposed entrance to the visitor's center.
On Tuesday I decided to try my hand at hunting for Morels. I've never foraged for Morels before and so far I haven't had any luck.
I did find a couple of varieties of false Morels but one I know is poisonous and the other I don't know enough about.
You don't see these out and about in the middle of the day very often.
Another creek...
and another with a Stretch.

Re: Wandering about in the woods
We were up to almost 3000 ft on the forest service roads down here in the Gifford Pinchot and there were just a few patches of snow left. This is encouraging because I thought there would be a lot more. :) :spyder:murphjd25 wrote:Looking good rem! I'm still waiting for the North Cascades to get cleared :D
Re: Wandering about in the woods
I made it out again yesterday to continue my quest for Morels. My luck was a little better this time but still no true Morels. I wandered through 6.5 miles of forest and found two areas where false Morels were growing.
One area was near this river.
I also came across my first snake this year. Isn't it cute?
On my way to the other area I passed by all kinds of spring flowers.
More skunk (cabbage)
Anyone know what happened to this cedar tree?
One more mushroom pic.

As usual remnar, great pics, a nice hike sounds great. That tree might be a lightening strike??

Thanks Dan! I definitely think you should go for a hike. :)farnorthdan wrote:As usual remnar, great pics, a nice hike sounds great. That tree might be a lightening strike??
The tree bark has actually been harvested by one of the local Native American tribes. They use the bark to make baskets, hats and other textiles. These trees can be found throughout the forest and some are very old. It doesn't seem to hurt the trees at all.

Re: Wandering about in the woods
I've only gotten out a few times in the last couple of months and I've been a little lazy about uploading and posting. Here are some shots from my last couple of outings.
I'll start with some photos from my last visit to Iron Creek.
Iron Creek Falls
The Stretch loves posing creek side.
Sally, my hiking partner.
The next few photos are from random areas.
The next series of photos were taken along the Ohanapecosh River.
This bridge is kinda special to me because I helped to pack in the concrete used in its construction. Spending the day making numerous trips with bags of concrete strapped to your pack board can mean only one thing...Bruised hips! Ohh the memories. :D
Silver Falls.
Time for a knife photo.
Shots taken upriver from the falls.
Further up the river it is a little calmer.
Zulu and mushroom.
Take a guess at how hold these trees are.
How close was your guess?
One more creek photo.
I hope you enjoyed the pictures. :) :spyder:

I haven't had much time for hiking lately but I did snap a few pics while at work today.
End of the road.
Anybody notice the spider in the last pic?
Another shot of the washout.

Re: Wandering about in the woods
Well, this thread has been savaged by PhotoBucket's new policies and I don't plan to cave to their extortion. The only thing left to do is post more photos.
Here's a shot a took on Monday when I took a quick hike after work.
Angel Falls (I wasn't going to post this because there was a similar photo previously posted but it's gone now. )
Here's a couple I took while at work today.
Meadow filled with lupine.
PM2 and lupine.
