Still working on the finish, using danish oil so the pores will be filled up sooner or later, purple heart with ebony spacers & copper pins. It's 11/16" at the fattest part & tapers a bit at the ends to a shy 5/8", very comfortable grip. Turning out OK this time. Gotta love that superblue.
Nicely done, Noseoil!

Elmer - I really like that Palo Rojo (which is sometimes called Padouk in the U.S.). Leaving the open grain exposed is really good looking - and will provide quite a bit of grip for the scales. Also love the attention to detail and the contours, especially near the ricasso area.

Well done!

TedP

P.S. - My experience with Padouk is that it will darken significantly over time and exposure to sunlight. I built a small jewel box for my wife this Christmas, and it has darkened to a deep maroon two months later. Some of my other projects have darkened to a deep reddish-brown within a year. Something to look forward to!

Hi Phillipsted, Thanks for your words. I think also that padouk will go to Dark maroon with The light, but It's good too. I'm new with Knives and I like to try diferent materials

I usually buy a pair of 1.5"x5" (or 6") scales, 1/4" or 3/8" thick. If you like thicker handles, perhaps 1/2" thick would work for you. The larger holes in the mule are 3/8" while the smaller are 3/16". The lanyard hole is 1/4". Always test out the holes before gluing, as sometimes they're not completely clean and it's hard to get the pins through them without some sanding/dremeling to clean up the holes. I've pinned a few with 3/16" pin stock and my current project will be pinned with 3/8", but for the vast majority I buy 3/16" pivot screws and bolt the scales on, as it makes then easy to remove and swap out later.

If pinned on, you typically want to epoxy the handles on, which will usually cause you to destroy the handles if you ever decide to remove them. You want to make sure that you scratch up the handle as well to give the epoxy a surface it can bite into. Using epoxy on the Super Blue should also help seal up all the holes in the handle, making it less likely to corrode.

Unless he drilled the holes out larger (which would be a lot of unnecessary work , those look to be 3/8" pins and 1/4" lanyard tube.

Hi! Sorry for my late answer. The laynard tube is 1/4' same like knife hole. The pins are slightly smaller than big knife holes, 1/3'

I always use the 3/16" (0.1875") holes for my pins.
