The sharpest, strongest, most durable knife on the planet

Post by Blueboost »

That is a pretty tall claim. I especially like the "nano serrations" which appears to be a macro picture of the edge grind. Also check out the metal alloy matrix edge bonded to a high quality steel blank of 2cr14N. Isn't 2cr14 akin to the steel used on knives like those found packed in those holiday cheese and cutting board gift sets?

It’s inspired by NASA!

Hard to understand what exactly is happening there but wow, they raised a lot of cash.

At Ultimatedge Knives, we sadly learned that very little has changed in knife-making in over 100 years.
That's a joke. Please send them an invitation to here.

I noticed they kept saying: "The LIQUIDIAMOND® edge is made with a patented metal alloy matrix developed by NASA and Cal-Tech "...

Alright, but what is it... Mean what makes this better than Maxamet, 4v, 3v, 15v, Cruwear, S110v, m390, 204p, 20CV, Elmax, **** I'll even throw in LC200N which is actually a steel used by Nasa.... So note sure... I am always weary of such broad claims, mean it looks like a sweet blade, but I bet my Spyderco Bushcraft is even sweeter.

Makes me sad to see that $106,000 was raised on something bogus.

"The best knife you will ever own" sadly, that claim is probably true for many who signed on ;)

It's an interesting concept, but the questions I have are; can it be sharpened with conventional sharpening gear? how much of the edge material is present (i.e. how quickly will it become a mild steel prybar)? is A2 tool steel really more corrosion resistant than S35VN?? (probably reversed "sharpness" whatever that is?!? with corrosion resistance in the graphs?) and finally, where do S110V, M390 or Maxamet fall on their charts?

If the claims aren't total BS, it's probably a decent knife for many people's needs, but I'm not going to throw out all my conventional steel blades *just yet* LOL!

I forget their names but I saw a review by those two Dutch comedians of this knife and it just didn't hold up. Go figure...

You should do a kickstarter with 66HRC ZFinit ;)

I ordered ten....

They keep saying NASA “tested”, rather than NASA “recommended”. Big difference!

...but seriously, would we even take recommendations on knives from NASA?!?

I like how their graph shows A2 has 3x the corrosion resistance of 440C, and sharpness is an easily measurable quantity based only on the steel (A2 can only get 1/3 as sharp as S35VN) For the 7 backers buying 4+ of these knives- I have some NASA approved invisible bushcrafting clothes to sell you as tested on Naked & Afraid! On sale now for only $500- That's 99% off MSRP!

Once upon a time, guys like this kickstarter would roll into town with a cart, slick patter and lots of bottles of snake oil....then leave sometime later wearing tar and feathers.

It lasts 10 times longer than other knives in this category. (Any mall ninja ever worn out their bushcraft knife?)
This special metal alloy is twice as strong as titanium Ti has a tensile strength of 484Mpa. Unhardened rolled 1090 Mild steel has a tensile strength of 840MPa.....so this is as strong as mild steel. WOOO!
Warhammer 40000 is- basically- Lord Of The Rings on a cocktail of every drug known to man and genuine lunar dust, stuck in a blender with Alien, Mechwarrior, Dune, Starship Troopers, Fahrenheit 451 and Star Wars, bathed in blood, turned up to eleventy billion, set on fire, and catapulted off into space screaming "WAAAGH!" and waving a chainsaw sword- without the happy ending.

These are good points you all make to be skeptical. I think before the claims of such things can become reality, we would need more advanced technology. Until then I am satisfied with such things as 440C, N690, H1, LC200N, and other steel.

I do want ceramic metals and plastic metals though. And diamond metals exist. The maker told me these materials could be used on knives NOW if companies like Spyderco and Gerber were interested, but, I was told the things would have price ranges in the 1000 dollars per inch range, and who except perhaps very rich people would afford that?

It took a few read throughs, but I think I finally figured it out. They're basically doing the same thing Buck did years ago with their Ion Fusion knives, where one half of the blade edge was coated with TiN. So, despite their claims that this is the most advanced thing to come out of the knife world in 100 years, they're about 20 years behind Buck Knives. I have a feeling whatever "LIquidmetal Matrix" they've used on the edge will be quickly worn away by regular sharpening.
