Factory Second: Would you buy this?

#1

Post by SpyderEdgeForever »

If a knife company had factory seconds for sale, and in this case, the issue with the knife was not only a cosmetic issue, like some seconds, but the following, would you purchase it or would you personally not?

The issue: The knife in question is claimed to be functionally alright, except for this: Due to a heat treatment issue, it is claimed that the steel is not as hard as the normal runs of this particular knife, ie, it may be softer and require more sharpening, and the cost reduction for it goes from the normal price of 75 dollars, down to about 37 dollars. Overall, the company claims the knife looks good, and, can cut well, but again, they stress to you that you will have to re sharpen it more often because the steel was not hardened as high as the normal runs of the knife. Good or bad deal for the price?

Also, because its a second, once you buy it, that's it. No returns, no warranty on it. You get it as is.

For the cost, I might. Would maybe depend on what steel and I would try to get some info about how much lower the HT is too.
For under forty bucks though. Probably worth the gamble.

Probably not. Cosmetic issues I can live with, but not functional or structural issues. The only exception is if, for whatever reason, I wanted it for "parts".

A knife like that should have been destroyed, or at least the blade should have been.

Depends. If it was an otherwise excellent knife, and the performance degradation was something along the lines of ZDP-189 reduced to the edge holding of properly heat treated VG-10, then possibly. But if we're talking VG-10 reduced to the edge holding of Pakistani steel, then not a chance in ****.

I don't buy a medicine whose specs (thus consequences) are not made clear. Knives (where heat treat is everything) are no different.
