Cerakote

#1

Post by i am travvy »

Anyone on here mess around with cerakote? I decided to try it out myself. Bought everything I needed to do it (cerakote, hardner, sandblaster, sandblast media, hvlp spray gun, ect.) And I just jumped right in. I bought cobalt kinetics green and also cobalt.

Decided to do the green on my Glock 26 slide to test it out. Here is a before and after.

Today I took the leap and did my entire glock 34 in cobalt. Also polished the barrel.

Before and after..

I absolutely love this cobalt color. I'm really wanting to do some yeti cups and also my ar9. Just needing a bigger oven! All I have right now is a little toaster oven. Anyways, anyone else here like to play with cerakote?

I have a question, how hard is it to complete this process. I have a Glock 22 and I think a green slide would look great.
Thanks

Thanks
I'll take you through the steps

Completely disassemble your slide.
Put slide completely submerged in acetone for 30 mins
Scrub slide with an old toothbrush.
Let air dry for a few minutes
Sandblast slide with 120 grit aluminum oxide or garnet
Blow off slide with compressed air
Let soak in acetone again for 30 minutes
Scrub with brush
Put oven at 250 degrees
Put slide in oven to bake out any oils
Let cool
Quick rinse in acetone
Mix your cerakote and hardner and put it spray gun
Hang slide on a hook
Spray slide with cerakote
Put in oven at 250 for 2 hours
Let cool
Reassemble slide
Done

Make sure you always wear gloves once you start handling the slide so you don't contaminate it.

Fairly simple to do, just a lot of prep work.

Never done it, but my understanding with Cerakote and even common powdercoat is, if you make the initial investment, you can basically print your own money. I know a guy who started doing powder as a hobby who now has a full time business doing it out of his garage.

Yeah that's what I've been hearing as well. The initial investment is the hard part. I have just the bare essentials to get it done. Only small parts though. I'm really wanting an oven that I can fit an ar into and also a pistol or two. May have to try and build one.

Yep, that's where it gets expensive. It's a slow process working up to that unless you just credit card the whole setup or get a loan. He started off with thrift store toaster ovens and then bought a used kitchen oven and now has ovens large enough to put motorcycle/quad frames into, and THAT is where the money is at...custom coated car/bike parts, you can just about name your price. With Cerakote you can probably make a decent living off churning out Tiffany blue Glocks lol.

Hey, I'll do nothing but Tiffany glocks if I can make money at it haha. I'm definitely going to look into building an oven. I beleive people are using old lockers, insulating them and installing toaster oven elements into them. Seems easy enough or I might burn the house down. We shall find out.

I wonder if you could use a cinder block.

I had a Stag Arms Manix blade cerakoted. It's pretty sweet, but I haven't been carrying it.

Thanks for the replies guys. Been super busy for work so havnt been able to reply. But thanks for the kind words. I have an idea in mind for cerakote and spyderco pocket clips. I know a lot of people don't like the Shiney pocket clips. Thinking of coming up with a blue jeans color or khaki color and testing it on some pocket clips.

Nicely done, Travis! Your Glocks (and Sig) look like factory stock. Great work!
