Must have knives to round out a collection

#1

Post by gingerninja »

Im looking for knives that have some sort of historical or popular significance that no well rounded collection should be without. Knives like the Buck 110 or some kind of SAK, maybe a spartan or solider for example. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If possible you ought to get some Gerber knives. The modern ones are not as well-made as the originals. But, for your purposes, get a Gator folder with plain or serrated edge. Also, get an Ontario folding camping knife, the all-steel kind.

I would add the following to your list:
1. Spyderco Worker
2. CRK Sebenza 21 or 25
3. Benchmade Balisong (any variation, but the Weehawk blade is a favorite, IMHO)
4. Gerber Paul Knife
5. Strider SNG
6. ZT 350 or 351
7. Pro Tech Godfather
8. Buck 119 Special
9. Schrade 34OT
10. Emerson CQC-7

IDK so many knives and so little time....Personally I don'
t like any of the suggestions thus far made (sorry Guys)...that said it would be better to know what the intended uses would be....If it's just a collection of non users then go ahead and buy everything on these guys lists...but if you have a specific purpose in mind the lists might be different....just saying!!!....Doc:)

I'd add-
Kabar original in carbon steel.
Pre-90s Gerber mk2 in the leather sheath
Faibairn-Sykes dagger
Warhammer 40000 is- basically- Lord Of The Rings on a cocktail of every drug known to man and genuine lunar dust, stuck in a blender with Alien, Mechwarrior, Dune, Starship Troopers, Fahrenheit 451 and Star Wars, bathed in blood, turned up to eleventy billion, set on fire, and catapulted off into space screaming "WAAAGH!" and waving a chainsaw sword- without the happy ending.

A Griptillian in any form, either the full size or the mini grip.
A Tinker SAK is a great EDC addition. A must-have? maybe?

If I am going to EDC then it is usually a Spyderco backed up by a Tinker SAK. On deck are my Griptillians and Leathermans. (leatherman QC has severely fallen off lately imho)

Emerson CQC-7 is a classic
KA-BAR USMC is a classic

Nice thread though. I will be watching. :)
Bacon. Sometimes beer, but mostly bacon. I like Spydercos.

Thanks everyone, some great ideas there, some i already have and others i'll be sure to get. Some are a bit expensive but are on my to get sometime when funds are more available list.

I'm focusing mostly on spydercos and to a lesser extent SAK's for my collection but also want to include classics.

There are some really great suggestions here. I'd add:

Gerber Sportsman ( early 80's. I have the Sportsmen 2 in "V" steel. That's vascowear naturally. Hard to find in collectible condition)

Black Kat AKA Mercator K55
Opinel
Douk Douk
Note: the three above can be found now in SS or Carbon steel. The Carbon steel is traditional

Case Trapper or stockman, stainless or CV ( carbon)

Spyderco police steel handled in serrations.

and many more.

The Mercator or the Douk-Douk are a must-have for any collection.
There is even a variant of the Douk-Douk called Vendedouk.
It's a Fred Perrin design, a mix of the Douk-Douk and the classic corsican Vendetta.

I would say:
CRK Sebenza 21 large or small plain or otherwise
CRK "Regular"
CRK Umnanzaan
SAK Cadet Alox
Strider SNG or SMF
Caly
Emerson CQC7
Benchmade 940 or 940-1 or 710

I want one of those vendetta folders now. The vendedouk caught my eye awhile back but that traditional vendetta is a must buy.

You could knock yourself out for a while getting Spyderco classics but outside of Spydercos I'd agree with an Opinel, Douk-Douk and a Buck 110. Everyone should at least own one Cold Steel of some sort at some point in their collecting lives (I still have two small Voyagers dating back to mid 90s).

For a SAK, whilst Victorinox and Wenger have been the same company for quite a while, they only stopped producing Wenger branded SAKs recently. They are still available and as a collectable, I'd get a Wenger before I got a Victorinox. Take your pick, they are all excellent value. Personally I prefer the Alox scales at the expense of not having tweezers and a toothpick.

Starting to move up the cost curve - Benchmade 710, some kind of decent Balisong, Emerson CQC 7, some type of Al Mar (Sere, Eagle or Falcon would be my choices depending on which appeals to you) and at some point when funds allow, a Sebenza and an SnG. Nice thing about the last two is that if it turns out you don't like them, you'll sell them and not be down too much if at all.

Fixed blades .... I have no idea.
