M390 Para or Sage 1 and S30V Para

#1

Post by .357 mag »

Well, as the title says.

I'm selling off a firearm next week to a friend that I don't shoot much. Some you that money is going to a new knife. Both the Sage 1 and the Para are a must to have from what all you have said. So what would you pick.

Para M390
or
Para S30V
Sage 1

Ive never owned or used S30V or M390. All opinions would be helpful.

Oh.. This is my biggest knife purchase ever. Will most likely be for a long time.

Thanks

You can grab the sage and para whenever you want. The M390 Millies might be hard to find down the road. Go for the Millie.

Agreed. M390 is top-drawer, and the other two are standard production knives.

on a random side note, I am glad that you don't shoot your friend much. :)
But to your question, I would go for the 2 knives. Although I drool over the M390, I just can't justify the price to keep one for myself. I would rather thump on the sage and para S30. But that's me. I totally get the flip side of that coin. The silver lining here is that no matter what you choose, you get a spyderco product. It's all good.

That is a tough choice.

I also have a tough time spending $190 on the M390 but man, I would like one so to me, I would go with the Sage 1 and a Para 2 s30v. You get two great knives vs only one!

I do see the other side of the coin here, as the M390 wont be around for ever and because I want one but cant bring myself to spend that much, I cannot get mad either way you decide! :D

Plus, you can probably use the M390 as long as you could use the other two together and still not have to sharpen it... ;) That might be an exaggeration - or might not be. :D

Thanks for the reply's so far. My biggest dilemmas are I can get 2 really good knives for the about the price as 1, I need a dress type folder, and as of now all i have is FRN lockback knives. So if I get both, I can experience a new (to me) steel, carbon fiber and G-10, and 2 different locks. If I go with the M390, well you know. What a dilemma..

S30V is plenty good enough, IMO M390 ain't worth the price of another high-end Spydie.

When in doubt, go Sprint. The others will be around later...

I say get the 2. For all the reasons you have stated, new steels for you, 2 types of knife, one classier, one rugged and good for work.
The M390 is a really good steel, but you trade off the classy looks of the Sage, you only get one knife. Sure it is a sprint, but that only really matters if you are really interested in steel or a safe queen to sell later.

I would carry a pm2 over a sage *everytime*, it's that good. The blade shape, in practice, is just so much more accommodating. Get the m390.

I would say go for 2. I own the M390, the Para and the Sage and if I had to choose, it would be the 2. M390 and CF is a great combination, but the size of military is not for everybody as well as a necessity in super steel. For about the same price (M390 is going on the bay and other forums for over $300) you will get an amazing combo. Sage is the most comfortable knife I ever had (and I have a lot), and Para..., well it's Para :)

I would go for the M390 Sprint for three reasons. First, it is a limited Sprint Run, and if you think $180 is expensive now, just wait 'til one-hour after they are all sold out. I like my Sage1 a lot, but I can always get one for a decent price if it is lost/stolen/worn. Same for the vanilla Para2. Second, the M390 Para2 has been my all-use knife for over two months now, and I just love it. It is no exaggeration to say that it performs like a knife twice its size, but has half of the maintenance issues. Finally, if you ever have to sell the M390, it will hold its value better than the regular production folders. The M390 Sprint is truly a special knife, and will be viewed that way for some time. I hope that these points are helpful in your purchasing decision. Good Luck! :spyder:

As already mentioned, sprints(especially one as desired by collectors as this one) will be quite hard to snag later. You can always get regular production knives anytime. I'm even making a guess that a year from now, you can trade a blue para for both a regular para 2 and sage 1 in an even trade.

Gave my S30v para2 away after carrying the M390 awhile. The steel is incredible.
