Why do some knives have a gold colored bug on the clip?

If you find one you get a tour of the Spyderco factory with Sal and you get to see where the oompa-loompa's make the PM2's :p

Seriously, I believe it's just a stylistic choice probably based upon the base color of the clip itself and what would contrast best with it...just a guess

Hmm...which knives have golden bugs on them? Also, when is the deep carry clip coming? Also, will I be able to buy a silver colored clip to replace the black one that will come with the Brown G10 Stretch?

Not 100% sure on the dates but Spyderco knives between 2000-2010 had the clips with the golden bug.

This, its an age thing.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

It might be a conincidence, but judging by my own small sample all Spydercos with the golden bug were made by Moki.
For example:
Calypso jrs in ZDP-189, Zowada, JD Smith, Shabaria, Massad Ayoob, small and big Persian, Kris, Viele 2
Maybe a Moki-specialty?!

They were featured on the clips of some models for a number of years and, as Marcus noted, may have been confined to models made by Moki. Gold paint was also applied to the :spyder: logos on the blades of some models for a couple years, but folks complained when the paint wore off, and it tended to do so quickly if the knife was used.

My G-10 Sprint of the C-60 Ayoob model that I got a couple of years ago had a Silver Spydie on it. Whereas the original C-60 Ayoob came with a Gold one. The only other one I ever had that sported a Silver Spyder was one of my older Caly jr. models that I can remember.
