Military or PM2 as all-around EDC? (if can pick just 1)

#1

Post by DansGunBlog »

Hey guys!

If you were buying one tonight... and you could pick JUST ONE for all-around EDC...

Will it be the Military or ParaMilitary 2? And why?

As a reference point, I really like the Resilience as an all-around EDC. Tho not sure how the Military and Resilience compare EXACTLY...

Ergos, comfort in hand, etc?

I'm right handed, and tip down is fine.

No office "dress" concerns.... Resilience has been working just fine.

Also, size of Military is not an issue, I'm OK with a larger blade.

EDIT:
Hate to bias the question, but is there any reason I may be missing to kick the Military out of my shopping cart and get the PM2 instead? :-)
Just bugs me that the PM2 is 2nd generation while the Military is still 1st generation... but everyone sure loves their Military from what I can tell.

Thanks!
Dan

Honestly, I would take the Military because it is larger. I would like a military with saber ground blade.

If size isn't an issue then I'd go with the military. I'm sure others will disagree but I find the ergos on the military to be far superior than the PM2.

OK, so is there ANY REASON to NOT get the Military? :-)

It depends on what you want in a knife and where you plan to carry it. If you work in an office or dress in other than blue jeans, then I would take the smaller PM. It also has a stronger lock. But, if none of that applies to you, the Military is easier to manipulate, and fits larger hands better. However, a lefty can accidentally disengage the Millie's lock during use if not careful.

Only if you're in a place where 4" blades are frowned upon.

Only if you don't like tip down carry.

It is kinda silly to not have holes on both sides. That's my only problem with the Military I have. :(

FWIW, I also just got a Paramilitary 2 and really like it. Multiple carry orientation options, deployment is easy, and the lock is pretty nice. Buy both, send whatever you don't like back, I guess?

I prefer the PM2 overall and will carry it before the Millie after work every time, and before the Millie some of the time at work. That said though, the Millie is definitely my favourite work knife. If I had to choose just one it would be the PM2 because I find it to be a more balanced package and a better all around EDC.

PM2 is a better knife. I love mine but it's not my choice for EDC. It's my EDDC ( Defensive ) but I don't think that style of blade is the best for daily cutting chores. It's a little thin for hard use. Get both, that's what I do when I can't decide.

I'd go PM. The military is a great knife but for me the PM takes the cake.

I have slit I soyderco knives and if I had to pick one and only one to do everything I think I would go PM2

If you don't have problem at all with the size, do yourself a favor and order a Military...! Perhaps take the Cruwear sprint while they are still available at a pretty decent price.

I was overwhelmed by the PM2, it was one 'perfect' knife for me. Many positive reviews about Military despite it is still gen 1 made me bought the military and now the military got much more pocket carry... the ergos and the length of the blade is great for me . Anyway you can always get both too :p

For EDC? Para 2 no question. It is really the bread and butter for versatility. But if you prefer a large size, just get the Millie if you have no issues with larger knives.

Para 2. I love the Para, but the Military just doesn't fit my hand, and it is way too big for my type of EDC. (Except for hiking/camping, of course.) Three of my favorite PM2s:

OP, all these different opinions should be telling you something..everyone is going to give you their opinion based on what THEY like..ergos, size, yadda yadda etc. etc....they are both excellent knives so what you need to do is buy both and see which one fits YOUR hands the best..keep them nice and which ever one you don't like you should be able to sell..

In my case I have big hands and I find the Para 2 handle is just to small but the Millie handle fits me like a perfectly sized glove..I carry a Millie 90% of the time..

I like PM2 better for EDC although I also have a Military in my EDC rotation.

^^ Exactly ^^

I agree with Philo - there is no "right" answer. It's a very subjective decision. I have what I'd consider medium/average hands, and the PM2 handle fits me better. I also prefer tip-up carry, which the Millie does not offer as an option. Third, I find the Compression Lock more natural to use than liner locks (easier/safer to close one-handed, etc), so for me the obvious choice is the PM2.

I agree that everyone has his/her own opinion regarding which one would be better for general EDC. Having said this, I would *personally* go for the Millie over the PM2 simply because I prefer a RIL or Walker Lock over the Compression Lock. Just my own preference, but YMMV based on your preferences. I don't imagine you will be disappointed either way.

All I can tell you is I've carried a Military in my right back pocket every day for about six years now and the Paramilitary and Para2 together totaled about six months of pocket time. Anyone who thinks the Military is too thin for hard use needs to sharpen their knife using skills more than they need to sharpen their knives. (Or buy a crowbar and carry that.)
