Sal, have you ever looked into making Ti Integral folders?

Just a question on feasibility of releasing such a product at a reasonable price, and if its something Spyderco has ever considered, or is looking into.

A lot of custom makers like Peter Rassenti (who apparently is licensed to use the Spyder Hole) make beautiful Ti integrals, that are just out of the reach of the average knife buyer due to the prohibitive costs of custom production.

Maybe a collab with him would be cool?

I just really like the style of his Nirvana folder (that and it LOOKS like a Spydie), and single block of Ti construction just seems awesome. Coupled with larger scale manufacturing, I don't see it being totally unfeasable? I mean, machining out Titanium is pretty much automated right? Blade machining is mostly automated? Whats left is the detail work, like any knife. Please correct me if I'm totally wrong!

Anyway just a thought.

Curious to hear what others think as well.

You mean a Titanium handled folder with an integral lock in one of the handle scales like the Chris Reeve Sebenza? Like the Spyderco Techno, Sage 2, Schempp Tuff, Chokwe, Domino, Ti Military, Tusk, etc.? Unless "Ti Integral" folder means something I don't understand, it's been done already to great fanfare, and several new models with the same construction are set to debut this year.

I think he means a one-piece ti frame, like a Lion Steel SR1, rather than 2 scales joined together with fasteners.

I guess no one else is interested in integrals?

I think that it would be excellent to see a Spyderco integral folder. My concern would be having the rest of the knife be what I like. I'm getting more and more picky with what I buy these days.

I am totally for it. I tried to post to this last night, but my stupid phone wouldn't cooperate. :( Anyway, please count me in. I'd love to see this happen.

Not sure if it could be done but, if it could, I might go for a titanium integral midlock (or Crawford lock) Stretch. Otherwise count me among the disinterested.

Ah, that makes more sense.

I might be interested (Depends on the design), but I see no problem whatsoever with the current production, and being able to take them apart into two halves makes cleaning easier.

Well youre not supposed to take Spydercos apart lest you void the warranty. Ive never found it necessary to take a knife apart for cleaning.

Integrals beauty is that its construction is literally one piece, the blade slides into place -- so if you wanted to, you just remove the blade, and rinse out the handle. No crevices or cracks between liners and scales for gunk to build up.

Of course no one sees anything wrong with current construction, but the way I see it, current construction actually probably has its own costs associated with it, i.e. assembling and finishing multiple pieces, whereas an integral is a solid machined piece that requires no assembly and less finishing (possibly some filework, some sanding, installation of detent and bedning frame-lock into position)

Anyway just the way I see it. I dont make knives so Im not sure.

Would love to hear what Spyderco thinks.

Isn't there a collab model in the works with Rasenti that IS an integral?

What's your ballpark on reasonable price?

Love the idea but machining away into powder titanium from a larger, more expensive , and heavier piece sure won't help keep costs down. The lock strength comes from a different thing than just two slabs screwed/riveted together, or machined out of one piece block. My guess is the cost goes up without much more than the "wow" factor and people are already expressing issues about the cost of Spydercos nowadays.

If it really advanced performance perhaps the cost could be understood better by guys in my salary range and below but I don't think it necessarily does.

Do keep in mind that, unlike prototypes, which almost always make it to production, concept models only do so about half the time and some that do bear only a passing resemblance to the concept version.

Well then please add my resounding YES! if they are on the fence.

Peter Rassenti makes really cool knives.

Titanium integrals are awesome, and sought after.

Spyderco should definitely do this.
