Impulse buy/Semi grail

#1

Post by Evil D »

I'm not sure how much of a grail this one is for me, but it has definitely been on my radar for quite a while now (right around the time it went disco, I decided I had to have one  ).

The lesson for today is, don't even go into the knife shop unless you're ready to buy something. There's no such thing as a crackhead browsing through a selection of different crack options and not walking out with some crack in his pocket.

I went in thinking I might pick up another Bug, because I really destroyed the blade on my last one. You know how when you see something for the first time and you know instantly you're going to buy it? You can stand around at the display case and debate the asking price or whether you really need it, etc etc but in the end you know dang well you're walking out with that item. That's how it was with this one.

In the end, it's a lightly used knife, shows some wear on the clip screws, was full of pocket lint and the pivot felt like it had sand in it, and there's some very fine chips in the plain edge section on the tip. Otherwise the G10 looks nearly perfect, the blade doesn't have any scratches at all, and the serrations look like they've never been sharpened but aren't factory sharp. I got it for $90 out the door, which I felt was a decent deal considering they aren't the easiest to find, and overall it's in excellent condition. I'll be eating Ramen noodles for a couple weeks and probably sleeping on the couch, but I think it's worth it :D

That's a beauty. I recently picked up a ce model. (Funny, i too started needing one right after they were discontinued). I probably would have gotten the full se but I already have so many serrated salts and not many combo edges so....

I like that you got it used. Keep you from having any weird thoughts about ""keeping it pristine". If there was ever a user it's this knife.

P.S. Sounds kind of like my house. Good news is, I like ramen and I have a comfy couch.

Very nice! Not sure why the serrated models don't seem to move very well for Spyderco (at least, I assume that's why they get disco'd). I've always liked their serrations and find that they stay sharp quite a while, so the extra difficulty of sharpening them compared to plain edge isn't really that big of a deal. You could always send them in to the factory if you didn't want to deal with it.

(Nice mouse, BTW!)

I'm planning on making this knife a bit if a test mule for sharpening with a Dremel. For the past year or so I've been using a tapered diamond rod to sharpen serrations, and then using a cotton wheel with polishing compound to buff off any remaining burr. I'm gonna see what happens if I skip the diamond rod and only touch it up with the Dremel.

In my experience typical diamond rods are too aggressive to achieve decent results on serrated knives.

I have done a number of serrated kitchen knives by planing down the flat side of the blade with a belt sander and then hitting both sides with the corner of a leather belt / green rouge. This would work on a serrated Military. You could use a water stone to plane down the blade and your dremel with the felt wheel to de burr. The results are awesome!

It takes patience but I have also had great success with the sharpmaker on serrated blades.

I've had great luck with the diamond rod, but you have to be careful since they cut pretty aggressively. I usually run the opposite side flat against a high grit stone to remove the burr and then strop with the Dremel and it works extremely well. I just wanna see if I can skip the diamond rod completely unless I end up with chips in the serrations.

Nice knife, and nice mouse...razer deathadder? I use the same one, and also have a black mamba for my desktop computer.

I would love a full SE military, my PE millie gets a lot of pocket time.

Yep, Deathadder 2013. First non Logitech mouse I've used since getting into PC's back in about '95 or so. That's saying a lot.

I love the Military. That's also saying a lot, because it took quite a bit to warm up to it. I still don't care for how (IMO) overly long the handle is, but I can't deny that it translates into amazing ergonomics. I'm always impressed with how light this knife is for it's size.

It is a light knife for its size and is especially useful I find when wearing gloves.

And I had a Razer Mamba for about 4 or 5 years (Wireless version of the Deathadder and the only wireless mouse that I tried that didn't have any noticeable time lag)...recently upgraded to an Ouroboros and it's utterly fantastic. I'm also on a Razer Black Widow Ultimate keyboard, which is fully mechanical so the keys really snap back at your fingers. I'll never go back to a non-mechanical keyboard...I can type so much faster and more precisely on this thing than any other keyboard I've tried and unlike the cheap mechanicals you don't end up ghosting at 6 or 8 keys. Once you go Razer it's very hard to buy anything else...much like Spyderco in fact.

Nice pickup David! I had a good chuckle about your crackhead comment as I was thinking of "visiting" a knife shop in Vegas in a few days, better hit the slots first I guess :D. The SE Millie is a beast, I know because when you were talking about it and it's merits some time back, I managed to find a new one for like $115 :p. Let us know how your sharpening expt works out. Cheers, Radioactive :)

Go to Bond's House of Cutlery...he charges a little on the high side price wise but is extremely personable and helpful, and had a LOT of rare and old discontinued Spydercos the last time I was there which was in August. It's a little West of the North end of the strip but not more than a couple minutes by car.

PS. I've had MUCH more luck playing Roulette than playing slots...electronic slots are FAR too easy for the casinos to rig, but table games are much more predictable as far as odds are concerned. You're still more likely to lose, but less likely than playing electronic slots.

Congrats! But I didn't know that there was a full-SE S30V Millie? I thought that the SE Millie only was produced in 440V?

Can't see the blade steel but I'm assuming from the above post it's S30V. Good find! I've been considering taking my 440V full SE and putting it into service, but for now it lives in its box.

It is indeed S30V, and has a date stamp of 2006 (can't remember what month).

The S30V ones are around... I found an older one a while ago, with the blocky jimping and smooth choil.

Congratulations David. Great minds must think alike. I traded a spare knife last week for this user with the blocky jimping that I love. It was a user and a bastard that has a digicam scale on the backside. I have a spare set of digicams that I am planning to blast down to natural and this bad boy will be my new user SE Military. I can put the 440V SE up in its almost pristine condition now.
