Modded two of the Spyderco "Beasts"

#1

Post by GoldenSpydie »

Well, I finished mods on two of the tough, old-school Spydies: the Ti ATR and original Manix XL.

I made natural jade ghost G10/natural canvas micarta scales for the Manix and I anodized the ATR. Here are some pics! :D

Sweet work, GS! Ghost jade green G-10 is one of my favorite colors in handle material.

Thanks guys! The scales on the Manix took a lot more planning and effort than my usual mods. They are in two pieces--not glued together.

Very nice mods GS! You have some skills (and some time on your hands apparently ;)). Cheers, Radioactive :)

Nice work. I really like that original fullsize Manix. I also like the anodization on that ATR.

Lookin good brother! Very nice work. About How long did it take you to make the manix scales? From the drawing table to putting in the last screw? Really digging that earthy brown micarta, looks good. Like your not afraid to use it and it can take a beating!

Wow, VERY cool. I really like the look on the Manix, not something I would have thought of. I'm wondering how it feels, is there an obvious difference in grip between the two materials? Like can you slide your thumb up the micarta until it stops dead on the G10? Or the other way around? Nice anodizing too, I might be playing with that sometime soon so I now I know who to go to for help!

I really like the feel of micarta in the hand and I wish Spyderco would use it more. Your ATR looks fantastic, I really like how that turned out :)

Thanks guys. I took the black G10 scales off a little over a month ago. Since then, I have worked on it in evenings and on weekends whenever possible. It probably took a few hours of cutting and drilling, a few hours of grinding, and about an hour to finish it up.

I hand sanded both parts with 150 grit to increase grip. The Micarta is extremely grippy, but the G10 is fairly slick. However, there is not that much of a difference, and it is hard to notice it while using it.

I'm happy to give advice to anyone about Ti anodizing or scale making.
