Re: Spyderco Photo of the Week Contest!
I did some mountaineering yesterday...
Here is my PM2 with my ice axe on the summit of James Peak on the Continental Divide in Colorado. The prominent snow-clad peak in the background is Parry Peak, also on the Continental Divide. When I took this photo, the wind chill was around minus 15 degrees F. So I guess you could say that my entry this week is a frozen contrast to Lance's tropical picture.
The 13,294 summit of James Peak is a walk-up in summer, but this time of year, it is a good idea to have more skills, including self-arrest with an ice axe, and more gear, such as crampons or microspikes. It was a strenuous hike up, but the views were worth it. It was also fun to climb up and glissade down the St. Mary's "Glacier," which, while it looks like a glacier, is really just a permanent ice field.

Thanks, GS, for teaching me a new word. We don't do much glissading around here :) It looks like it would freeze your backside, or feet maybe if you did it that way... or does the friction do anything at all to offset the cold? Something tells me it doesn't.
Also appreciate the geographical info and glacier vs ice field nuance, and, of course, the great photo

Re: Spyderco Photo of the Week Contest!
That's what snow pants are for. Seriously though, I was wearing long johns, wool army pants, snow/ski pants, a fleece shirt, a thermoball coat, a heavy winter snow coat, glove liners, winter gloves, a wool hat, ski socks, and very warm snow boots. The wind/ice/snow didn't stand a chance to cool me off too much.DougC-3 wrote:Thanks, GS, for teaching me a new word. The main problem is getting going so fast that you can't stop--but that's what the ice axe is for.
Here are two pictures in case anyone cares what the scenery looked like. Of course these aren't my contest entry, so please don't count them as such.
Here is James Peak (the mountain we climbed)
Here is the view from the summit

Re: Spyderco Photo of the Week Contest!
Hi Lance and congrat's, you snapped a great photo :). You are correct Sir, you are the judge for this week. Just pick your winner and runner up on Sunday evening after 18.00pm your time, (definitely easier said than done :) ).Surfingringo wrote:Right on and thank you. :) So how does this work? Don't worry Tap, you'll hopefully have your prize soon and if you keep posting such great photo's you will be judging many more times :)tap78 wrote:I think so .... I have been omitted.
