T-Mag owners - question about the magnet...

#1

Post by gbelleh »

I recently got this lightly used, but excellent condition T-Mag. Every picture or video I've seen clearly shows a solid, one-piece magnet. But mine seems to either have two magnets, or the one-piece magnet has a line cut across its surface. Does anyone else have a T-Mag that looks like this? Or do I likely have a modified magnet? I know some people were replacing the magnet with two stronger ones. The seller wasn't aware of any modifications having been done.

Thanks.

Looks like an aftermarket mod to me, definitely different from the factory-installed one piece magnet. How's the retention?

I've never handled a T-Mag before, but the retention is about what I would expect based on videos, etc. It's pretty good, but not super strong.

Don't have my T-Mag handy, but I'm absolutely sure it hasn't been modified and fairly certain it has the exact same groove in the magnet.

Another thing is my box is coded GG. Maybe there was a change in the magnets at some point in production?

Here is a thread worth checking out. I don't own one, so I'm not much help.

Yeah, that was the thread that got me wondering if mine was replaced. It does look more like a groove cut into a single magnet than two separate magnets. But it would be nice to see another one like this that is confirmed original.

I own two original T-Mags, one with box-production code DG and one with FG: both have a solid one-piece magnet and no groove.

Mine has production code CG (and is CC# 126) and has what looks like a solid one-piece magnet.

I just got my T-Mag a few days ago BNIB, and it doesn't have the groove. As long as it works, I'd be fine with it! :)

Finally located my T-Mag and I was wrong, there's no groove visible in the top surface of the magnet. That's not to say there isn't one on the bottom surface, I know I've seen magnets with a groove like that on one surface. So I'd say it's still possible that yours has the original magnet, just installed upside down.

If the blade retention is as "good" as that of a normal T-Mag, or better, then it really comes down to why you bought the knife and your expectations for it. Given that you described it as "lightly used", I'd assume you bought it to use. In which case, if it were me, I'd be satisfied with it as long as it worked properly, but that's just me.

Thanks everyone. I'm fine with the knife as it is. But I do like to know what I have. If I do ever sell or trade it down the road, I'd like to be able to honestly describe its condition, and an unknown, aftermarket magnet could be a deal breaker for someone else.

Thanks again for the replies.
