why can't I find a MULE to buy??

#1

Post by dubya3 »

From what I understand they're only sold at the SFO so I went to order the XHP blem for $60ish and there aren't any available. No big deal, about 14 of the other steels will work for what I want one for so I start going through them and can't find any available :( Anyone care to share their secrets of where they can be found? I'm planning on making one into my dedicated big game hunting knife and need it done in ~4 months before deer season!

Most of the older Mules do show up occasionally on eBay, usually at obscenely high prices, and even more infrequently on the BladeForums exchange at more realistic ones. Aside from that, the Mules are pretty much a "when it's gone, it's gone" proposition. Spyderco only makes about 600 in a given steel, and a new one almost never comes out before the previous one sells out. Getting the current CTS B70P Mule using the link Nate provided is probably your best bet.

Agreed. Evidence that the mule team is working, mostly users buying to use (or for a custom scale project).

Get the MT20. There should be more coming out this year, and since there has only been one in the entire first half of the year, one should be right around the corner. I believe it was mentioned that four or so were slated to come out in 2015.

Now if it's specifically XHP you're after, good luck. Like Deacon said, mules come up infrequently and usually sell at an unreasonable premium. If that's ok with you, just be patient and vigilant. They do show up.

ton-of-junk on ebay has mules for sale new in the box for $149. Great seller to do business with from experience. Also call Omaha Knife.com and they probably can fix you up with a lot of unadvertised specials on past Spydercos.

I might have to resort to ebay if I can't find one by next week. The prices are outrageous though, some are decent but for a knife that's generally a user and not a collector I'm surprised they're as spend as they are on the secondary. If I happen to buy a XHP version, is there any way to tell if it was a factory seconds, like a notch in the spine or something?

Sorry nate, I didn't spot your post at first! I'll check it out lol.

ETA: I'll order one of the current MULE tomorrow. I haven't heard of that steel, anyone have experience with it? This knife will be specifically used to open up deer so will see a lot of blood, hair and skin.

No problem man, it happens.

Seems like almost no one has much experience with this steel. Here is the longest thread on it, with some good info:

viewtopic.php?t=67166" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'd be interested to hear how it works works out for you.

I really need something that's stainless as it'll be covered in blood, snow and other organic matter and I won't be able to care for the blade for at least a few hours after using it.

I went ahead and ordered the Mule team 20 B70P. For $80 I couldn't pass it up and it's stainless so it should do what I need it for. I'll follow up with a short review when I can.

Well of course the day after I put in my order for a MULE Team 20 I found a guy selling/trading a MULE 18 S110V with custom hardwood scales. I offered my CRUWEAR Manix 2 and he accepted so I really didn't want to cancel the 20 but Scott at SFO was very understanding and luckily my order hadn't processed yet so it was an easy cancel. I'm very happy to get a tested and awesome steel in S110V now rather than being a guinea pig with the B70P!
