Calypso Jr. II
Calypso Jr. II
My all time pocketable favorite is the Caly Jr. :D
I dream of an evolution of this model which would include:
a larger Spyderhole
&
jimping on the thumbramp & choil
But...but...the fishscale FRN has GOT TO STAY the same
Now a couple of questions for everyone in SpyderLand...
i. Would you buy a next-generation Caly Jr. II ?
ii. What would your dream evolution design upgrades of the Caly Jr. include?

It is a very nice design! I could see the benefit of a larger spyder hole and some thumb jimping on the handle...
I would like to see some more sprint runs.
Bright Red g-10 and solid ZDP blade.
Always room for another Caly!

Re: Calypso Jr. II
The evolution of the Calypso Jr. is actually the Caly3 and UKPK.
I personally wouldn't like a larger opening hole and jimping. I don't see a need for those "improvements". I've never understood why you would want jimping on the choil. To me it feels very uncomfortable.
I. Most likely. I like everything that's somehow related to the Calypso family.
II. No swedge, no Boye dent, carbon steel, FRN in a nice color or linerless micarta or stainless steel or aluminum or even titanium. Of course it had to be pinned together.

A Calypso jr.Salt would be great .H1 steel ,high hollow grind a la Dragonfly Salt.Yellow FRN handle of course.

Yes, assuming it was either the FRN or Micarta version.
Eliminate the Boye dent and the swedge grind on the blade and slightly round off the sharp transition between the top of the thumb ramp and the rest of the spine. Stick with VG-10 for the steel and full flat for the grind. I could live with a larger Spyderhole and jimping, but I could live without either, especially the jimping.paladin wrote:ii. That knife was before my time. Anyone have pics?
Re: Calypso Jr. II
The Burgundy ZDP-189, 2005 version of the Caly Jr. is one of my all time favorite EDC, all purpose folders that Spyderco ever made IMO. Now I have a little different view of the Caly Jr>> because one of my very favorite versions was the the stainless handled, hollow ground version. I just like that blade design with a hollow grind for some reason I find it to be a really nice EDC cutter.
I also dearly loved the other model in the AUS-8 era which was the Micarta Caly Jr. I used to have the Micarta version in full Spyderedge and it was a mini-beast for sure.
Now the Burgundy ZDP-189 model was great in full flat grind but there is something really nice about that stainless handled, hollow grind version that I just loved. So there are my considerations for a Caly jr. II

Re: Calypso Jr. II
The best evolutions of Caly are Caly3 and Caly3.5 G10/VG10 (tip up carry, no swedge, G10 and liners, wire clip and the best size of the blade). Unfortunately, it is discontinued already.

Ahh, perfect! Thank you Kyle.
Re: Calypso Jr. II
I like the knife design, HOWEVER, would I buy ? Wire clip, NO....hourglass clip, YES.
Re: Calypso Jr. II
The burgundy Caly Jr. is a lovely knife, but yes, I can imagine some improvements. I find that the handle does not really fit well into palm without using the choil area for grip. Feels somehow insecure, maybe jimping could improve that. I think the hypothetical Caly Jr. II could learn a bit from the current Dragonfly whose handle is ingenious. The blade shape is fine - the grind could be thinner behind the edge (but that could be said probably about many other spydercos - I am coming from the world of kitchen knives, so there is a clear bias). I love the FRN handle (and that awesome color), not much change needed there.
... I like weird ...
Re: Calypso Jr. II
Jabba beat me to it, but figured this would still be an interesting pic:
I would buy a Caly Jr 2, but not sure what it would be in my mind yet. Too busy hoping there will be another sprint.
Some things on the original Jr that stand out to me are the thin grind, sharpening choil, no jimping, and bring on the fishscale.

Re: Calypso Jr. II
I'd love a h-1 Caly Jr.
Re: Calypso Jr. II
I don't think that the classic design of the Calypso jr. should be refined.
Additional jimping, removing the swegde and a larger hole would make it very close to the Caly 3.
I'd vote for a luxury variant of the Calypso jr. as a Sprint:
Titanium bolsters, polished burgundy micarta scales and Super G2 for the blade.
and some more pics

Re: Calypso Jr. II
it seems like the Caly Jr. triangulates the features of the UKPK leaf pattern, Native 5 LW and Dragonfly... all excellent knives in their own right.

still more knives than sharpening stones...

Re: Calypso Jr. II
I love the Calypso jr, would also buy a new version but basically I would buy anything with fish scale FRN..
Re: Calypso Jr. II
I'd take one in micarta. White or black
