Southard Positron (Ion) Status Check

#1

Post by Liquid Cobra »

I remember seeing Eric mention a summer release for the Southard Ion. Anyone have any updates on this knife? I've been über excited for this one since I first saw images of it from the A'dam meet.

Yes, an update would be nice. :D
I just now noticed the smaller opening hole. Will this be a functional hole, or more for looks only (similar to the Pingo)?

Not functional at all, purely for branding and aesthetics.

In that video Eric also mentions CTS-204p, do we have a final answer on what the blade steel is going to be? Pretty excited for this little flipper!

Patiently awaiting his one. Definitely purely aesthetic for the hole. I thought we had a confirmation on steel....????

The Ion is being renamed the Positron because that name was already in use by another company in the cutlery industry. It will be included in the 2015 Mid-Year Product Guide that will be unveiled next week at the Blade Show. That means it's on track for release during the latter half of this year. I handled the pre-production sample when I was doing tech specs and writing copy for the Mid-Year Guide, and it's a sweet knife...

The steel will be CPM S30V.

Stay safe,

Mike

Thanks Mike, looking forward to the mid-year guide. Hopefully we get to see some booth video from the show floor!

Yeah, thanks for the info on the name change.

...so I guess I have my eye-off the Ion. And now looking forward to the transforming Positron, more than meets the eye. :p

Thank you for the update Mr Janich, so many great Spydercos coming out around the same time. Shame about the name change though, Ion had a great ring to it.

 Oh no! S30V? On a co-lab?
This is a special knife, should it not be "special"?
I was all set for 204P. Even CTS-XHP would be great.
I love the design, the size, the handle, the inlay liners, the flipper, the bearings.

Cool off! I guess this choice is to keep the price down. :D 440C?

Thx for the info!!! Major bummer on the steel, I was looking forward to a nice steel, the world has moved on an S30V has had his time.... only positive point is indeed that S30V retailprice is very low and carbon isn't the most expensive materiaal any more and the steel liners don't add much cost, so this must reflect in a lower price. But now a day you never know... I was shocked by the MSRP prices of the Ti Pingo an Squeak aswell, I can have a custom version built for that price....

My guess is they really wanted a cheaper flipper. This is it. It will be a hit.
