Pathfinder makes me think of Blind Horse Knives...and Mora...and Buck again...Dang! Clearly a good name :(

Short names that don't have multiple stages seem better. They don't get shortened, like PM for ParaMilitary.

Thanks Chris for the explanation, pity Endeavour couldn't be used, it has the space connotation but was also the ship Captain Cook used for his first circumnavigation of the world.

Anyway, I'm sure now that we have all the brainpower of the forum on the case we can come up with a few extra suggestions :p

C_Claycomb wrote:Hey chaps. Glad you are having fun. :D but there are some ground rules that need to be observed. :p

From Spyderco:
"When you’re searching a name that you’re interested in, on Google, make sure you add the word “knife” after the name. I learned the hard way that sometimes knives won’t show up under a specific name unless you add “knife” in the search.

We try not to use any names that are used by anyone else, whether or not it’s in the same realm of knives, or not. However, it can depend on how well known the off-product name is. If you’ve never heard of it, and the product has nothing to do with knives, then there is a probability we’d still use the name."

Here are some of the ones that were either suggested to me, or that I thought of, which would have been good to great, but can't be used:
  • Voyager – used by Cold Steel
    Exped – dry bag manufacturer
Safari – Boker, Kizlyar and DPx Hest II
Endeavour – only one letter different from Buck knives' Endeavor
    Odyssey – Used by Buck
Peregrine – (meaning wander or roving) used by Hawkebrand knives
    Venture – Used by Gerber
    Reliant - Used by Emerson
    Capricorn - used by Fox
    Orion - used by Viper Knives of Italy http://www.viper.it/en/outdoor&caccia/orion.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Gemini - Used by both Busse and Boker
Adept - used Steel Will knife
    Wanderer - used Boker
    Contrail - used by CRKT
Techtrail - is a watch company
    Overlander - used by TOPS
Discovery - used by Beaver Dive Knife and a discontinued Timberline folder, I think this is nice, but may not be good enough.
Boreas - (Greek god of the north wind) told that if it needs explaining, its no good.

It is also worth pointing out that the reason that we were calling it the "NASA Bushcraft" was that it implied the use of all modern materials, modern steel and man made handle, compared to the original Bushcraft which was carbon steel and wood. I envisioned the knife as suitable for trips/travel/adventure where a stainless blade and impervious handle would be good, light weight yet full size and capable of heavy work. That is what would have made names like "Voyager", "Odyssey" "Discovery" and "Endeavour" so good. They related to both adventures and journeys, and the space age. Sadly, everyone else thought that they were good names too, and beat us to them!

As you can see above, I was drifting away from the NASA references since the pool is limited, the Bushcraft now sports manmade G10 handle, so this new knife doesn't stand so far away, and pursuing the space line of naming took things ever further from the spirit in which the knife was designed. Without care, I feared becoming enmeshed in Star Trek / Star Wars geek-isms ;)

Still looking!!! Got a few being vetted by Spyderco now but while I like a couple, none is as good as Endeavour.

Aha! So the name spyderco pathfinder knife is still available!

Hmmm. How about "PayLoad"? Adding a "s" is optional.

When I saw the photo, it did not remind me of anything other worldly, or high tech, or high speed. It brought to mind the early travelers, trappers and mountain men who depended on strong, sharp fixed blade knives for a multitude of chores. So, I put forward the most irascible, tall tale teller of them all as the knife's namesake: The Beckworth.
Overheard at the end of the ice age, “We’ve been having such unnatural weather.”

As a die hard Carl Sagan fan I would have to suggest, Cosmos.

Previously I suggested TREK.
I think it's a winner.

I had several that I thought were clever but they were a no go according to google.

How about "Solara" or "SpaceCraft"?

How about "Endurance", after the ship that took Earnest Shackleton to the antarctic?

Not so much. Personally I am not a fan of reusing the names of fictional blades, just seems a little corny. Otherwise I would have suggested "Angrist" :p

Endurance is good, but might it be too close to Endura?

Further to Endurance, how about:
Resolution (or Resolute)...or "Resolve", which also happens to be the name of a lunar rover?

Not too bothered about retaining reference to space, but it is nice to have.

Resolute and Resolution are prettty good and I think they both have Royal Navy connections. If memory serves HMS Resolution was the ship Captain Cook used on his 3rd voyage when he was killed in Hawaii.

Other thoughts I had were, Corona, Sirius and Lynx
