The reason I carry pepper spray is that the Post Office issues it, or at least used to issue it, to mail carriers. Several mail carriers have told me they had good results.

There are two kinds of pepper spray, CN (alphachloroacetaphenone) and CS (Orthochlorobenzalmalonitrile). CN works faster on people, but CS incapacitates better, once it takes effect. Police often prefer CS because they wade in and use a whole lot of it. For spray and run, CN might be better. Some pe...

Very early Natives were trash, often sold in the $10-$15 range when word got out. New production knives are fine. On the early Natives, the hand could depress the back spring when the knife was strongly gripped, which released the lock. The so called Boyle detent is just a moon shaped cut-out in the...

My wife carries a native, trains with another with the edge and point ground off and polished. Works fine. A Yojimbo is better, cuts deeper, has a better lock, but the native fits her hand. The penetration of a blade may be quite a bit deeper than the length of the blade because unsupported flesh, l...

"It's true that steel isn't as important for a straight killing knife (I would imagine). More important is shape and design, the best being those based off of the fairbairn/sykes dagger, like the gerber mark II and such. I already have a knife I carry for this purpose (the protech elite combat ...

Stair tread tape comes in various degrees of roughness. It's intended to go on the edge of treads to keep people from slipping. It is sometimes cheaper than skate board tape, and can sometimes be found in more colors. Hardware store item. There is a really aggressive tape used by wing walkers, which...

I think of a knife as safety equipment, so I'm willing to pay what reliable gear costs. I ask myself, if I find myself really needing a knife to get out of a difficult situation, what I would rather have in my pocket, a $50 knife and a hundred dollar bill, or a rock solid $150 knife? Granted, I put ...

I carried a MOD Tempest for about three years. Used it hard and it's still in good shape. Now it lives in my bugout bag. Prices all over the map. They are out of production, and the price dropped to as low as $100, but as they get harder to find the price is going up. http://www.blackhawk.com/produc...

If you think a knife is safety equipment, test it.

If it breaks, it makes no sense to get it repaired, because that will just bring it up to its original unsatisfactory condition. Buy a better knife.

If you don't want to learn how to juggle the thing, hold it in reverse grip, point forward, and throw hooks. Preferably tight hooks, as opposed to wide, looping hooks. Retract quickly. Might work for you.

I understand there were production problems, because the knife handles are individually hand shaped, which causes enough variation to make the sheaths less than interchangable. There was some talk of a molded handle, but I guess that never happened. Some Spydercos are still available on line, and Mi...

The Yojimbo problem is a quality control issue. I carry two, left and right, and the clip moved just fine for me. You should get a replacement.

This is fairly dangerous, and a drill press with a drill vice and some kind of wooden holding fixture might be a good idea. If you drill the blade, lock it down, stay clear, and be careful. A drill can spin a blade, and spinning sharp things are dangerous. Since carbide bits work by burning, it is a...

I carry two Yojimbos for three reasons. First, I prefer to rely on capability rather than intimidation, and the Yojimbo is purpose designed to be a fighter. It has amazing cutting ability, and a long list of features a skilled knife fighter wants. Second, the Yojimbo is a very good utility knife. Wh...
