One each. Set one up for right hand carry, and the other set up for left hand carry. That makes it easy to tell which is which.

I just might have mentioned this before, but training matters more than the knife. If you want to learn to use a kerambit, find a Pukulan practitioner. While you can do some fancy spinning with a ring dagger, Pukulan practitioners tend to hold the knife in reverse grip, move in close, and throw hook...

I practice a one hand opening because, if I have the space, I step back with my right foot to protect the knife during the draw, and I get my left hand forward to fend off an attack. After which, I step back with my left foot, to get my knife forward. That said, if I fumble the opening, I certainly ...

On a more personal note, I was transporting a decorative sword home a few years back when I got into a car accident, I am still struggling with the carrying of an illegal weapon charge I picked up for that (trying to get it dismissed on account of the fact that I was transporting it and not carryin...

When I lived in a jurisdiction where the legal limit was 3", I muttered a whole lot of bad things about Spyderco as I carefully used a belt sander to modify some 3 1/8" blades to 3". I never understand why Spyderco thought that extra 1/8" was necessary. I do not believe in harbor...

I use dishwashing detergent, an old tooth brush and a vegetable sprayer set warm at the sink. A Q-tip may help. You can use a tooth pick to clean out the notch where the lock engages. I believe in light lubrication.

We're all anxious to learn, and if you offer down-to-earth advice we are curious about your practical experience. If you say training is useless, you must have done well working out against a trained knife fighter. If you say a knife is useless, you must have experience to back it up. Tell us about ...

Green (chrome) polish on a high speed buffer might do it, but if you don't know what you are doing the blade can catch on the buffer and hurt you seriously. Gloves and eye protection are necessary. Places that sharpen knives often have buffing equipment, and they might be able to help you. Some peop...

All this is putting the cart before the horse. Denn's assertions not withstanding, knife fighting is about learning the right conditioned reflexes very well. That takes serious training with a good teacher. If you get good training, you will know what you need to do with a knife, and you will pick a...

There is a knife museum in Pennsylvania that has a lot of expensive knives on display. I asked them how they preserved their knives, and the proprietor suggested Butcher's Bowling Alley Wax. The local hardware store stocked it, and I bought a can. I have been using it for about five years, to store ...

For people who are confused, sicklebar mowers have triangular blades riveted to a bar. A pitman arm moves the bar back and forth sideways through "guards" to create a scissoring action that cuts grain or hay as the cutter bar is pulled forward. A good rule of thumb for a throwing knife is ...

I prefer a Yojimbo because it's easy to carry, it deploys fast out of a pocket, the punyo is a good impact tool, and if you know how to use a generic knife, you know how to use a Yojimbo. If you can use a Yojimbo, you can use any standard knife. If I have a knife in my hand, I'm thinking stay alive,...

It's a nice piece of work, and the photography is excellent, but since you can cut to the bone with good straight bladed knives, and also thrust with them, I'm not clear what problem it solves. If you want that kind of knife, pruning knives look like they could stand the strain better. I still carry...

I prefer the Ronin, but any short, solid knife should work. Cramped quarters are one reason people learn trapping, hooking, and reverse grip knife fighting. It would be a mistake to just concentrate on the knife to the exclusion of empty hand techniques.

I don't see for the life of me how an Endura trainer could hone your skills with a Yojimbo I think it's a mistake to be tied to a particular knife for defensive purposes. You should be able to use the knife at hand. That said, I carry two Yojimbos and I would welcome trainers. If the Yojimbo goes a...
