Re: Let’s talk SE fixed blades
I have experimented with a Whale Rescue for 7 different proto folders. There are two holes in the tang. A fixed blade is easy, but a folder is not. I have tried pins as locks, but you have to remove and replace the pin each time you open and close the blade. Bolts and nuts the same. ( Titanium pins,...

If I have to work in the sea, I use a Salt, or a Whale Blade. If I have to cut rope, I use a serrated blade. ( or a Serr...

An extract that I did in 2018 in EM... . ......I have Rockwell tested all my files, old and new, and the variance is scary. They were tested at the brand mark and the tip of the file. Four indentations. Nicholson, Bahco, Grober...and borrowed from other craftsmen and craftswomen that I know: Pferd, ...

Re: It's All About The Heat Treat
For those that say a file that slides on the HTed blade is the test... One question...What hardness is the file? :) In my HT experiments, I tested a bunch of files to see the HRC. Enough of a variance that is matters. A file might give you a general idea between the difference of annealed and harden...

Re: It's All About The Heat Treat
In the 1990's, ATS-34 was released with a bad batch, and reacted like yours, Sidpost. A lot of South African knifemakers got together and bought a bulk order in sheets. They had to remake knives that were sub-standard. Pitting all over the blades and rusting along the edge were common. I never used ...

Re: It's All About The Heat Treat
Any heat treatable steel sold to anyone should have HT specs with it. It is in the steel company's interest to sell more steel and the "stuff" associated with it. When I worked at a specialised steel company, anyone could ask for the HT specs, and we would give it to them, but the corect a...

If you look at the proto image, and measure the blade length of 2.5 inches against the scales, it might be just a tad under the NZ legal requirement?
