Re: Any "real-world" tests of SE H-1?
https://knifesteelnerds.com/2019/06/24/h1-steel-how-it-works/ So according to Larrin the edges of SE H1 knives don't actually show an increase in hardness and so it doesn't make sense that they would have an increase in wear resistance. He seems to strongly disagree with the common wisdom about SE ...

Re: What is wrong with Spyderco customer service?
Is the parcel going through a courier? (It's been a while since I ordered from the SFO, but I'm assuming that's your only option.) Once you have a tracking number, try to get ahold of the local office for the courier that will handle delivery, and ask them about leaving a forwarding address or f you...

Re: Interest in an Ikuchi sprint or exclusive?
For a special edition, I'd love to see a titanium or ivory micarta dot insert for that hole in the scales. IMO that's more in keeping with Paul's original concept of using the hole as Spyderco's version of a decorative shield than just deleting it. For extra points, a tiny spider logo engraved on th...

Re: Shipping to Canada
That depends on the customs official you happen to get more than it does the shipper. Some customs officials will pull knives with no justification. Some will let automatics and balisongs through. If your order goes through with a large lot of other retail stuff, they may be less likely to even look...

Re: A Case To Be Made For The Dodo Model
Secondary market prices have little or nothing to do with the chances of getting an "economy" or re-designed run of a "hot" model as far as I can tell. IIRC Spyderco needs to sell thousands of units to justify the tooling and manufacturing time and actually make money on the run....

Re: Military 2
Since the last time I thought about a revised Military, I discovered front flippers. IMO extending the tang to make the Millie a front flipper would be a cool extra trick. Not necessary, of course, since the hole is better for opening in nearly every way, but it wouldn't hurt the design in any way a...

Re: Knife lubricant
I still want to try out Eezox in that regard, but this product isn't available where i live. I bought some Eezox a while back. It seems like an excellent CLP and the rust preventative properties seem to work very well. That said, it smells. They added a sweet-spicy herbal scent to Eezox (possibly t...

Almost looks like it was adjusted with a punch, like there's material displacement. (not just wear.)
What does the mating face look like?
If you're happy with the way it feels and the bar is locking correctly, don't worry too much about what it looks like when you disassemble it.

Re: Knife lubricant
Anybody know any rationale for using KPL, pros or cons, etc? I thought it might work with a little less friction than mineral oil, just guessing, very difficult to tell. (I tried the Heavy on a ball bearing lock with a faint click, and it helped some.) Pro: Convenient dispenser One bottle will last...

Re: An 'Astute' assessment
S35VN would be a definite increase in wear resistance, but IMO the difference between 8Cr and BD1N is minimal for thin super-slicing edges. (I.e. the difference in composition will not show up as much as the actual geometry / heat treat.)

Re: Which runs of the Military have the stiffest detents?
The KW-exclusive framelock (one the first/the first with the lock interface insert) puts enough lockbar pressure on the blade to prevent drop-shut closing or accidental pocket opening, but it's still perfect for flicking open. Haven't had a linerlock model in a while for comparison, but I don't reme...

Re: Any experience with Itamae knives?
I haven't handled them, but opinions I've read range from "they're a bargain-priced way to get a Murray Carter knife" to the sentiments echoed by Lumpy above. Balance is said to be very slightly blade heavy. Since you can't please everyone, that seems like an excellent report to me. :D I h...

For those interested in a novel/gimmicky take on the blade shape, Darriel Caston has an interesting folding mini-ulu called the ""Whorl": https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/drocketdesign/the-whorl-titanium-handle-edc-knife-simply-cutting https://ksr-ugc.imgix.net/assets/013/216/431/...

Re: ZDP-189 outside of Japan.
Other USA manufacturers have used it for limited runs, so it's certainly possible. (Though the first manufacturer coming to mind has a corporate connection in Japan, so maybe it's not as easy as it seems.) There are enough interesting steels on either side of the ocean to produce more sprint runs th...

Re: Using graphite and other dry lubes
On the farm, dry lube is my go-to on exposed chains and anything that's going to be sitting in dust. (Example: seed meter rollers.) The advantage is that it won't attract and hold grit the way grease does. The downside is that it's not really doing anything to prevent dirt from getting into a moving...

Most definitely a fake. Perhaps take a sharpie and write fake on the blade, so the next person knows. Or write a note and hide it in the box. Good idea! I'd talk to a customer service rep and make sure they understand it's a fake before taking this step, but a big "note: this item returned bec...

Being a butcher for many years it was also eye opening when 3 butchers bought a new knife Brand/Steel and there was always 3 different reviews. We always used to chase the sharpest edge and there was always comparable results when one person sharpened all three knives. I know it’s hard to fathom fo...
