Re: Cruwear micarta Bushcraft/Proficient

.... So I would like your opinions on manufacturing locations? Maybe if Chris sees this thread, he'll chime in? Maybe a new thread? sal Hello folks, Sal explained the challenge of site capacity and cost for having a knife made in Taiwan or Golden vs the materials and price point available from thei...

Re: NASA UKPK

Hello Folks In my opinion, including the word NASA really only serves to confuse people in this situation. The NASA nickname was given to the Proficient by the designer, Chris Claycomb, due to high end materials used. Spyderco has never had any official association with the real NASA. It is not an o...

Re: Sharpening horror

I wouldn't recommend throwing it away. There is still hard steel, well treated, attached to a handle. It just needs someone with the right equipment and technique to remove the over-heat, thin the edge, and actually sharpen it. It would then be useable as a knife, useable to practice sharpening on.....

Threads are always more fun with pictures....but since we cannot show pictures of the knives I sent to Sal, I thought I would share this one. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51843983087_dfacd42604_c.jpg O1_and_Welsh_Ash by Last Scratch , on Flickr A chap I know here in the UK who has bought quit...

Re: Cruwear micarta Bushcraft/Proficient

The liner in mine was bonded in with something like contact cement on the first 1" or nearest the mouth. I think it was Sal who some time ago recommended using something thin and metal to poke down either side of the liner to separate this adhesive. I used a 12" hacksaw blade, teeth were n...

Re: Cruwear micarta Bushcraft/Proficient

I PMed this to GaryArt, then thought it might be useful here. I designed the sheath for deep carry of the BushcraftUK knife, its meant to go down a long way, and is based on the very widely used bushcraft knife pouch sheaths. Usually with veg-tan leather, these sheaths start out tight but loosen up ...

Looks like I have some work ahead on both knives. I will let you know when I have made some progress.

Thanks

Re: Cruwear micarta Bushcraft/Proficient

Sal, Your email load sounds horrifying! I feel a pang of guilt now having resent to both addresses! If it doesn't show in 24 hours I will use another account to send. Fireman, I like Sal's analogy regarding scraping some material off a fatwood handle, although I would have said it was more like usin...

Hi Pancake,

I haven't received anything from Chris yet. I'll need to use his model for a while to make any decisions.

Re: Cruwear micarta Bushcraft/Proficient

A FRN model with removable scales is interesting. Maybe a hidden compartments for fire starter, etcetera with the option for after market scales. Slotted flathead screws with a lanyard charm/screwdriver/fire steel striker? Are hidden compartments really useful? I have always had doubts and have ten...

Re: Cruwear micarta Bushcraft/Proficient

Sal, 8" total, 3 5/8 blade. 110g (3.88oz). For comparison, the Proficient is about 8.75"oal, 4" blade 183g (6.45oz). It is a refinement of the one I showed you when I saw you last. I will drop you an email. I didn't mean to derail discussion of variants to the existing knife. I wanted...

Re: Cruwear micarta Bushcraft/Proficient

A Proficient Mule...I would have a standing order for that :D
but don't think it likely to happen, as I understand the purpose of the mule is that they are all the same shape, always will be, so they can always be compared with each other, today's with those from five or six years ago.

Re: Cruwear micarta Bushcraft/Proficient

Sal, et al. Is there enough potential sales value in trying to make further use of the Taichung investment that made these machined handles possible? The Proficient didn't sell all that fast and unless its possible to make some changes that reduce manufacturing cost then I don't see a reason a new v...

Re: Cruwear micarta Bushcraft/Proficient

Hello folks, I saw this thread when it started, then life got in the way and I came back only at the start of the month. Glad to hear so many folk like the Bushcraft and Proficient. They don't get talked about nearly as much on-line as the folder range. I loved the idea of a Micarta 3V or Cru-Wear P...

I have little to add other than to keep the swedge! Let's not let the FFG-boring-steak-knife mafia take over knife design! There are times when a FFG-boring-steak-knife is a good look....like when you want a knife for cutting steak! :D Swedges do look good, they can help aesthetic interest f...

Re: Need input on knife desing

Have you considered doing a hidden tang? If you want lighter weight, that is the way to go. Sure, you could taper the tang on the grinder, but if you are not practiced (my problem) or don't have quite the right gear (also my problem) it can be a bit of a PITA keeping everything flat, finished and th...

I was thinking that a titanium version would be pretty cool, but probably quite expensive. I am not so sure that S30V will hold up for long in a salt environment.

Updated Dive Probe / Assist Salt hybrid?

A friend of mine is a keen diver (Stuart https://independentadventurer.wordpress.com/) and has been looking for a good prying tool. He came across old photos of the Spyderco Dive Probe and thought that an updated version, with a blade system copied from the Assist Salt, would be an awesome diving to...

Re: If Engineers were in charge?

I am an engineer, and what I hear coming through rather strongly from the OP's friend is the classic engineer not understanding, or appreciating, people as much as they do machinery ;). Engineers typically are more interested in whether things work than whether they are nice to look at, or popular. ...
