Re: Civilian sharpening angle

The ceramic rods don't really have a grit rating as such. As far as stock removal and scratch pattern go, I personally find the brown rods fall between a well broken-in DMT Coarse (blue) and a well broken-in DMT Fine (red) and the white rods a bit finer than DMT Extra Fine (green). I realize that ma...

Yep, deburring wheel polishing the back causes that.

Re: Ikuchi, the best Spyderco folding filet knife?

I have to agree with Matt, the Ikuchi blade is nowhere near flexible enough for filet duty.

Re: Civilian sharpening angle

The serrations are ground on one side only, the back side is the angle of the primary grind. The actual total included angle can vary a bit, but should be very close to the 20° angle of the SharpMaker. Color the edge bevel with a Sharpie marker and take a couple of passes to see where the marker is ...

Re: Changes to OpFocus Program

Today I tried to sign up for OpFocus Program and I didn’t finish the application because at some point ID.me asked to provide my social security number. I thought this is ridiculous, why do I have to give my ssn in order to complete my application? Members of OpFocus please let me know if you had t...

Re: H1 Fixed blades

The serrations are ground all at once on a shaped wheel. It isn't the heat that causes the work hardening, it is the mechanical/abrasive removal of material that does it. That's why it is always hollow ground, since that process is done on both sides at once. Grinding one side at a time results in b...

Good luck. There are a couple on eBay right now if you don't mind spending $700.

Re: Flattening Whestones

Glass with a plastic protective film, like the stuff they put on new appliances (the "Remove Before Using" stuff). That way the silicone carbide grit sticks in the plastic instead of grinding away the glass, at least in theory.

Re: Building a Custom Knife for Sal: CPM S60V

It's going to be interesting to see how it holds up in use. As I recall, the initial run of 440V/S60V Military suffered a lot of chipping at a lower hardness than this.

Re: Spyderco Hawkbill Stainless, No Model Number

Yep, it appears to have the integral spring, a feature that went by the wayside pretty quickly. Nice find.

Edit to add: Welcome to the forum. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people here. I happen to have one of those as well.

Re: VG10 HRC

I had a girlfriend tell me "It's not fair that your hands can be that soft. I know what you do for a living." And yes, if I pick up a knife or other tool and immediately feel sharp spots digging into my hands, I have enough experience to know what those spots are going to do when I start u...

Re: What year did they start putting bug on blade?

https://i.imgur.com/RAfhAG9.jpeg The top knife in the pic is the one that popped up on social media and sparked this question. Yeah that is the one. Notice bug on blade and engraving is perpendicular to all the others. The engraving location really is odd. Spydernuts aren't fond of words down the m...

Re: What year did they start putting bug on blade?

That would put it as possible with those dates. Never seen a Lil Temp with the bug before. What steel does your L'il Temp have? They used 440V/S60V for most of the production. I think the bug went on when they changed to S30V. It could have just been mine but my old s30v lil temp 1 had no spyder As...

Re: What year did they start putting bug on blade?

I don't know for certain. The Boye dent appeared around 2001, and all the newer models in the 2006 catalog had the bug logos on the blades, although the older stock pictures do not. My C95 Manix doesn't have one but my C101 83mm Manix does. I would guess around 2004 for a start date on the rolling c...
