Re: Cruwear pitting, and repeated spot corrosion problem
Nitric acid and citric acid are both used for passivation, but you already have pitting.

Re: Cruwear pitting, and repeated spot corrosion problem
Once you have pitting it will just keep getting deeper; that’s the pernicious thing about pitting. Another thing I will add about the “cross contamination” thing. It doesn’t have to be a different steel. Ground particles from the same steel will accelerate corrosion if they are not fully removed. “P...

Re: Ok, could it be that LC200N fares better against Magnacut than some might think?
Thanks, Larrin! Makes me wonder a bit what Eric meant in the shot show vids by saying something along the lines that edge retention and wear resistance (he used both terms) of LC and MC could be really close, and it would be not "totally obvious" that MC holds an edge longer... (https://f...

Re: Ok, could it be that LC200N fares better against Magnacut than some might think?
LC200N has higher toughness and corrosion resistance than MagnaCut. MagnaCut is capable of higher hardness (64 vs 60 or so) and MagnaCut has much higher wear resistance.

Re: Science of sharp 15v analysis
I always like seeing Todd's blog articles; his imaging is always top notch. I had a lot of thoughts about his study. Some of my thoughts and questions are critical of the study. Since Todd is a fellow man of science I figure I can write about those things publicly without hurting his feelings. It me...

Re: Böhler K888 Matrix Steel
Wouldn't k890 still be far tougher that any average user would actually need/even notice, while having better edge retention? Knowing Bohler, though, I'm assuming k888 is gonna be to k890 what Vanadis 8 was to Vanadis 10. Either way, New steel is always interesting! How much toughness is necessary ...

Re: Böhler K888 Matrix Steel
Bohler has never done my toughness test before and I doubt they would start now so I wouldn’t go putting those values on my charts.

Re: New Discoveries found in 8Cr13MoV testing
Shawn ground the CATRA blades and did the “metallography” for this study so he helped a lot with the study. Metallography includes mounting the steel in epoxy, polishing, etching with acid, and imaging on the microscope.

US Steel and Nippon have nothing to do with Crucible and Niagara making MagnaCut.

Re: Spyderco K294 - Kizer 10V Comparison Testing (BESS Data Included)
I usually don't document anything more than just memory and maybe a few notes in my sharpening journal, but this thread has convinced me to change that. Relying on our memories and feelings is very dangerous, as I’ve learned many times looking at records of my own tests. Also comparing things witho...
