Re: What’s The Hold-Up with Magna-Cut?
We have had reports of warping with long thin blades. Warping is relatively common with knives it is mostly about severity and frequency. The shape itself of a knife lends itself to a warp rather than other potential types of distortion that can occur during heat treating. As noted there are certain...

Re: How much does toughness matter?
887g bess on that edge? I would have expected higher. I always thought it was funny that all those fancy edc prybars were always made of titanium (flexy) or s30v (looking at you Peter Atwood) - I'm sure if someone made an actual folding pry bar/cold chisel with a reinforced pivot, it'd sell and act...

Re: H-2 Steel, Knife Steel Nerds Article is Out
The day after I posted my H2 article to Patreon Sal was there at Blade at my cryo class which was part of the show. Along with Mike Janich and Eric. Because I had some constructive criticism for the Spyderco Byte I was a bit concerned about what Sal might have thought of it. But I was pretty sure th...

Re: H-2 Steel, Knife Steel Nerds Article is Out
One difficulty with measuring serrated edge retention is they dull much, much slower than plain edges. CATRA has an extended 200 stroke test for serrated edges rather than the typical 60. Even then a VG10 knife I tested basically didn’t dull at all across the 200 stroke test. So just like with plain...

Re: H-2 Steel, Knife Steel Nerds Article is Out
I was just sent the Myodo datasheet for H1 which has a couple interesting things in it. For one H1 was developed by Nippon. Typically a datasheet for a steel doesn’t call out the original developer of a grade so this is somewhat unusual. Presumably this means there is a Nippon patent for H1 which mi...

Re: H2 vs. H1
I literally had to check the date to see if it was April 1st. Never thought I'd see the day. I guess my first question would be, why is H1 not being/not able to be produced anymore, yet an entirely new recipe steel can be? What hard times prevent one steel but allow a new steel? Component availabil...

Re: M398 Steel Testing – Edge Retention, Toughness, and More
Hi larrin, I'll see what we may have "laying around"? What size do you need? sal The individual charpy specimens are 2.5 x 10 x 55 mm and I usually test three of them. So a 3 x 40 x 55 mm piece would do it. 55 mm in the rolling direction. With a bigger piece I could do more hardness level...

If someone sends me some 1/8” K390 I can test its toughness.

Larrin, Wouldn't mind having your input early on. They're rolling it for us. We have no experience with the alloy, so we'll take anything you can offer? We'll like to get the best out of it that we can.....for all of you. I guess you are now part of the R&D team for "Real World Testing&quo...

Re: @Larrin: Sandvik 7C27Mo2
Molybdenum, like chromium, has an effect on the corrosion resistance of steel. Molybdenum can also increase the hardenability, toughness, and tensile strength of steel. It increases the hardenability by lowering the required quench rate during the heat treating process to make a strong and hard ste...

I think it’s too early to say that Spyderco has made any decisions to not ramp up SPY27 knives. Everything takes time.

I'm hoping that my video drew more attention to Shawn's rope cutting studies. They were very useful for understanding cutting behavior.

Re: CPM MagnaCut | Edge Performance
I stand corrected and perhaps a bit more confused. This is too much to explain effectively in a forum comment. Corrosion resistance is controlled most by chromium “in solution.” That chromium forms an oxide layer at the surface that prevent iron oxide (rust). More chromium in solution means better ...

Re: CPM MagnaCut | Edge Performance
Corrosion resistance vs hardness is when comparing between different steels not within a given steel. The tradeoffs for heat treating for high hardness usually don’t involve a reduction in corrosion resistance. One of the major ways to increase hardness is by austenitizing higher which also provides...
