Re: ZDP-189 - choosing the right waterstone

Maybe I missed it but there was no defining of the carbides and their hardness? ZDP-189 is a hard and carbide rich steel but they are Chromium carbides which only run into the upper 60's of Rockwell hardness. Even the low abrasive density King waterstones can sharpen ZDP it's just going to take long...

Re: Sharpening Service?

As a professional sharpener I can help with your dull knives, but no one will be able to fill the request of kinda sharp. When the Slopes of a bevel meet and form an apex the knife is sharp, the grit the edge is finished too gives it its refinement. The difference in sharpness will not be enough to ...

Re: Tip Sharpening & Repair

I use benchstones (mostly waterstones) and by rounding the edge it makes sharpening curvy blades fairly simple. To get a nice pointy tip I start at the tip and use edge trailing strokes to assure I don't gouge the stone. I also use finger placement to apply pressure on the edge where needed to pinpo...

Re: Am I crazy to want an Emerson CQC 7

I have an Emerson commander that's about 10 years old now with about 5-6 years of carry time. It has had two factory services for worn out and/or slipping liner lock and currently needs a third, that it might one day get. I purchased it because it was cool and had the wave feature but it was never m...

Re: Are Non Clad Steels Stronger Laterally?

As someone that sharpens a lot of Japanese blades this is very common. Its part of the knives design to bend and be bent back, for larger blades they sell wooden sticks made just for the task of bending blades straight. The idea is to encase the hard brittle metal with a softer metal so you do not b...

Re: Would a Para Military 2 in FRN or FRCP interest you?

I voted yes, Truthfully, I am not that big a fan of G10, it gets very smoth and shiny in just a few short years and loses its rough texture in just a few short weeks. The bi-directional texture of the the FRN on my Endura for example is still far more positive of a grip in my hand than most any G10 ...

Re: How do you guys like your edges?

Depends on, the knife, the steel, and what it will be used for. Sometimes it's a 400 grit damond plate and others it's a 5000 grit waterstone.

In general I like a 2000 grit waterstone finish when sharpening a customers knife, gives a good balance of toothy and polished.

Re: PE Hawkbill reprofiling, sandpaper and block method?

I find the rounded edge of a flat stone to work the best for all inward curving blades. Doesn't take much, about as much curvature as a Bic pen will get the job done. Edge trailing strokes starting at the tip and working to the heel help keep things more consistent, though it's a method best used on...

Re: Official Thread Regarding Upcoming Endura/Delica/Stretch

As per the question about the sharpened angle of the endura. It's about 18-20 dps, this was one of the first runs and they had some issue with the thickness of the saber grind. Yes, the bevel was very large but the steel was also very thick. It had nothing to do with the chipped edge. IIRC, my dad w...

Re: Official Thread Regarding Upcoming Endura/Delica/Stretch

So with all your posts combined, you suggest that they DO NOT proceed with SG2 and HAP40. What do you suggest they do? Just stay with the tried and true VG10, and a lowered HT ZDP189 (like you discussed). These Japanese models do not have many options other than what is made in Japan so...any other...

Re: Official Thread Regarding Upcoming Endura/Delica/Stretch

Spyderco has to think of the mass market and play it safe as most production knife makers do. My picture example was to illustrate what happens when they produce the hardness levels we request and it gets in the hands of someone that uses a knife like a utility razor.

Re: Official Thread Regarding Upcoming Endura/Delica/Stretch

The Intended use part is where folders and kitchen knives go their separate ways.

Kitchen knives- light use, high sharpness, ultimate cutting machine.

Folding knife- thrown in a pocket, abused, hap hazardly sharpened, abused, neglected, batoned through a log, did I mention abused? ;)

Re: Official Thread Regarding Upcoming Endura/Delica/Stretch

Both HAP40 and SG2 (aka R2) can be ran at high hardness that are typically not found in folders. Unfortunately, if they ran them that hard the masses would break them. Kitchen knives are a different ball game and while it great to see these steels in a Spyderco I think it's taking it too far outsid...
