Re: Blue Nishijin Stretch2 XL Damascus
This was the only 'must have' that I found when it was revealed, plenty of other nice stuff but this one is a thing of beauty.

Re: New Steel Testing Method! My wife and the cupboard.
Exactly. Wait what? Definitely chipping but very micro level. After my photo lessons and the kids go to sleep whatever time that is, I'll try and get some better close up shots. It could be denting where a small piece also happened to fall out. If you believe that it is chipping microscopically hav...

Re: New Steel Testing Method! My wife and the cupboard.
For all the folks who have been marching around this forum with protest signs reading: "DOWN WITH CATRA; DOWN WITH CHARPY; DOWN WITH ROPES; WE DEMAND REAL-WORLD TESTING NOW!" ...well, here it is, folks! Served up to you by the notorious Mrs. JSumm herself. Is anyone saying these tests are...

Re: What makes a steel 'aggressive'?
I do not agree as Larrin's model has not been proven to actually correlate to real world cutting. Larrin himself makes no such claims that his tests predict real world results. He simply puts forth the data from his tests, the problem is too many conclusions are being drawn from this data which has...

Re: What makes a steel 'aggressive'?
Now hang on, I don’t think the criticism several posts above is fair. If the criticism was meant to be trollish, I shouldn’t respond. But it’s also possible the post in question represents a gross misunderstanding of the scientific process, in which case, someone needs to respond. The often-heard a...

Re: What makes a steel 'aggressive'?
I think that almost all steels can become very sharp. A BESS tester would prove that, but what a BESS tester cannot do is tell you how many carbides are in the blade and how long it will cut. Given available test results, especially Larrin's repeatable tests of total cards cut by a machine, I think...

Re: What makes a steel 'aggressive'?
What do you mean that a carbide rich steel 'cuts better'? This is rather vague and I don't know if you mean cuts longer, gets sharper, etc. I think that almost all steels can become very sharp. I do not agree as Larrin's model has not been proven to actually correlate to real world cutting. Hi Traditional.Sharpening, I'm somewhat curious since you have already expressed not wanting to do any tests yourself, what you think an actual good testing would be? From some of your previous posts y...

Re: What makes a steel 'aggressive'?
I am no steel or sharpening expert. I read what Larrin produces and make good use of the charts. I just know what I like and stick to buying carbide rich steels for knives under 6 inches if at all possible. Carbide rich steels are chosen for a reason, they cut better than the older non carbide stee...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal
I have not yet needed to condition the shapton 5k stone. When it's time would you recommend using one of my diamond plates, or something else? I'm very inexperienced when it cokes to flsttening and conditioning stones that wear faster because I've been using diamond plates and Spyderco ceramics bas...

18" straight edge machete. One of the easiest things to sharpen on a belt sander and I still manage to get the show side a little wonky, haha. https://i.postimg.cc/Pf1MfRqW/20231115-163420.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/8PDm7mFq/20231115-163430.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/mk33dtnX/20231115-165219.jpg h...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal
I definitely prefer the harder shapton to the softer cerax at the moment, but that could be due to user error on my part. when it comes to the cerax I heard soak it until there's no more bubbles, and leave any slurry on the stone that forms as it's supposed to aid in the sharpening process. But the...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal
The Cerax will allow you to get shaving sharp if you understand what you need to do in achieving this end point. You simply must flush the stone and allow it to dry slightly as you do not want any of that mud left once you've gotten the edge thin enough to be at the verge of being 'sharp'. A few edg...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal
I've bought new sharpmaker rods twice over two decades, so I've gotten to compare my most worn set to a fresh set. The old ones still cut but they leave a more polished finish than the fresh stones do. Either way keeping them clean is definitely essential to getting good performance out of them. I ...
