Re: S30V or SPY27

I doubt you'll notice much difference between those steels as they should be in the same class and it's difficult to even reliably discern between different classes of steels. Many report seeing big differences between similar types of steels but I believe this is mainly to do with differences in sh...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal

Not Shawn obviously, but I'd try the Atoma plates or DMT Diaflat plates for this application. If you want you could also use the bonded Diamond 'stones' like the Nano Hone/Naniwa/etc., but a perfectly flat fixed abrasive on a plate is going to get sharper in my experience than something that releas...

Re: Native 5 Lightweight - Lube pivot or not?

I always lube linerless spydies. It makes their action smoother just like any other knife. Funny I never lube anything on a pocket knife, what am I missing aside from the smoothness? Where on the blade is the best spot to apply the lube? I'd think something like a firearm lubricant would be good fo...

Re: Janky grind on K390 Delica Wharncliffe

@Traditional.Sharpening I don’t understand why you are asking me to provide evidence so you can answer a question that was not being asked? I’m absolutely fine with the blade on my K390 Wharncliffe Delica. I do not need your input to tell me my blade is fine. If it was like the OP’s, it would have ...

Re: Janky grind on K390 Delica Wharncliffe

I contacted the seller (National Knives). They checked their remaining inventory and said every Delica K390 had a similar “hawkbill” profile toward the tip. Send back for a refund then put a wanted ad out there. There must be plenty of K390 wharny delicas in circulation that do not have a hawksbill...

Re: Janky grind on K390 Delica Wharncliffe

Not the worst I’ve seen on a wharncliffe blade. I had a Rough Rodger wharny once that was more like a full on recurve! But it was very cheap. …unlike the Delica. Send it back if you can. One of the main draws of a wharncliffe blade is the edge is easy to sharpen - yours is not going to be, and beca...

Re: Janky grind on K390 Delica Wharncliffe

Yes, it is normal and what I would expect when a human being is grinding a straight edge like a wharnecliffe using a powered grinder. Getting that edge perfectly straight and flat is something that I believe can only be done properly using a perfectly flat bench stone. Ask me how I know... ;). I ma...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal

ordered some silicon carbide grit to attept re-conditioning my old sharpmaker stones. I've been replacing them on average of every 5 years, so I've got 4 sets at this point. I ordered 1,000 grit for the fines and 500 grit for the mediums. Also got some 300 grit to try and get a medium set extra coa...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal

The question I have... How do they make the bevels even from the factory despite the warps? The Kizer had an even bevel grind, and so did the Kershaw (actually produced by Moki). But both blades show a definite concave warp when put up against a straight edge. They do this by using very obtuse edge...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal

How do you guys feel about uneven bevels? I was looking at a Kershaw knife I did years ago when I was first getting into free-handing. I added a "relief" bevel that I convexed, but it wasn't very even. On one side of the blade, about the mid-point from heel to the tip, the relief bevel's ...

Sigh stumbled onto this thread and thought hmm 🤔 maybe this will help sort out my confusion. Nope! Just reinforced my confusion with HRC and bevel angles. Sigh 😔 still optimistic that I will figure it out some day. I'd personally ignore HRC numbers if I were you, it's best reserved as a QC step in ...

Re: Gotta rethink my hunting/gutting knife…S110V FAIL!

I will. I think the blade stock behind the edge is dramatically thicker on the Shaman compared to the Manix 2 and should add edge stability. This alone should help prevent chipping. False. If you notice with the pics of the chipping it did not extend even close to where the edge bevel meets the pri...

Re: Community Sharpening Journal

Thanks Guts, and especially Vivi, for your feedback - super helpful. I'm definitely afraid of working one section or another too much without working the full edge, in part due to some misadventures with my WorkSharp Precision Adjust. I'll try some more with the Frontier Valley and report back. You...

Re: SNK Manix 2 LW is coming!!!

I fully intended to buy this one, but I was busy doing something at work and forgot to buy it. It stinks that I missed it, but the White FRCP/Satin Rex45 Manix 2 LW GPKnives exclusive dropping soon will make up for it. I have some of the other 4V exclusives of SNK's, and they're great, but I almost...
