Re: Shot Show recap, thoughts, things I learned
I'm very curious about that 2.5" skinning knife with a liner lock you mentioned. That sounds like a knife where the liner lock is very purposefully selected and it absolutely has my attention! Although a frame lock instead of a liner lock, the SpydieChef is my de facto folding pocket big game ...

Re: LC200N for mullet? Recommendation Needed
As a surf fisherman, my preference is a serrated blade from the salt series. When I keep a fsih, my number one priority is preserving the innate culinary goodness of fresh fish by bleeding it. That means slitting its gills and nothing does that better then a serrated edge. For larger fish like strip...

Re: Experiences with hawkbills?
The Tasman is one of my favorites, especially in black. But to be honest, I really like the Byrd HB. Had to pick up one of them too! Picking up the Byrd Hawkbill was a good decision. If you don't really need the extra corrosion resistance and at a third of the cost of the Tasman that's a win. Actua...

Re: Experiences with hawkbills?
For most, gardening and draw cuts on materials like rope are very much in it's wheelhouse. Most people also like sharp points on their Hawkbills.I actually file down the tip on my Byrd Hawkbill and use it to outline fish before I filet them. Works very well and saves the edge on your filet knives fr...

Re: Boning knife folder - stretch 2 xl? Which one?
I have both the Siren and S35VN Resilience folders and would probably choose the Resilience over the Siren for this purpose.

Re: Boning knife folder - stretch 2 xl? Which one?
Actually a slicer or carving knife might be the proper tool, but a filet in a proper sheath might do just fine.

Re: New Discoveries found in 8Cr13MoV testing
My sample group of 8CR consists of 3 Kershaws. I was impressed with none of them. Edge holding was less than my VG10 Spydercos or 154CM Benchmades. Sharpening them was easy enough, but occasionally they seemed to develop a burr that I'd have to get past to get a good edge. I gave 2 away & held ...

Re: Boning knife folder - stretch 2 xl? Which one?
Spyderco doesn't actually make one, although the PE Catcherman probably comes the closest. Even though a rustic environment, you might actually consider taking a fixed 6"+ filet knife in a sheath.

Positive angle for slicing. Think Japanese swords.

Re: New Discoveries found in 8Cr13MoV testing
I would choose 14C28 over 8Cr13MoV anytime, but it's just nice to know that 8Cr is not the junk everybody seems to promote especially Spyderco's 8 Cr.

Always felt Spyderco's 8Cr13MoV was a tad bit underrated.

Re: What Spyderco Knife Has Surprised You the Most and Why
I grew up in an era where 3.5-3.75 was the norm so I guess I'm kind of a large blade guy by today's standards so it's kinda surprising that the knife that surprises me the most is the serrated LC200N UKPK Salt 2. Surf perch are kind of on the small side so I just whip the UKPK out and run the blade ...

Re: The Catcherman as a filet knife?
I have one of the old AUS-8 Catchermen, and I don't rate it highly as a fillet knife. Too short and stiff for the fish I catch. Stiff knives work better for larger fish, and short is almost never good except for really small fish. Sure you can fillet with a Catcherman, but it's more in it's element...

Re: The Catcherman as a filet knife?
Hi Skydog--- I don't own a Catcherman, but may order one just because I'm a Spydie fan. Everyone's thoughts/needs may differ. The Catcherman may be a good fit for a camping/fishing/food prep scenario, but as a serious filet knife, there are other choices for me. A Phil Wilson for instance. My prefer...

https://www.chicagoknifeworks.com/cold-steel-commercial-series-6-fillet/ I know the handle works well for me and it came with a sheath. I haven't fished frequently since I was a kid. Slowly piecing together a kit, and gonna take the kid out to our local lake this spring. Good on ya. Potentially gre...

Re: Your Ideal Folder for Hiking & Backpacking is....
Yes Frame lock is by far best for outdoor debris use Ball lock fills up and is hard to open/close Compression/liner lock when open fill up and blade can’t close Back locks can be fouled when closed but most crap cleans out for adequate lock up with a couple taps. Can be closed no matter how much de...

Re: What "others" are in the mail?
Took Vivi’s advice and ordered a Cold Steel SRK. For a few dollars more I got the full size in SK5 steel. Only $38. Love that handle with rubber grips. They're great knives for the price. SK5 performs a lot like 1095. Quick and easy to sharpen and tough enough for any camp duties. I've got another ...
