Re: Byrd Comet Hole

I like the comet hole. But it's mostly an appearance thing. Like Cliff, I don't feel that much of a difference. But I don't have fat fingers and that could make a distance. There is a lot more surface area for contact though.

Spy27 would also have to be shipped to Japan, further increasing costs.

Re: Where does the Tenacious stand at 15 years old?

I agree there are some amazing knives in the sub $100 range from a number of Chinese manufacturers. I've had some dalliances with Civivi, Sencut, QSP. Truthfully I'm loving the 14C28N steel I've been getting. But at the end of the day there's a Spyderco design ethic that none possess. Nothing feels ...

I'd be up for a BD1N Native 5LW. Would make a great beater knife.

Re: Does anyone know why Byrd doesn't offer D2 steel?

IIRC (and probably don't but too lazy to use the search function this morning) Sal said something at one time about not being impressed with the Chinese made steel purported to be D2. I'll admit that the D2 I've received in things like the Steel Will CutJack or some Civvivi products hasn't impressed...

Thanks for the info Dan, this is potentially really good news. Did you get the Balsa from a craft supply or wood supply shop?

What a tough decision. Can I vote "all the above" plus some mentioned in the comments?

Re: Community Sharpening Journal

I would add that if you get the leather strop belt, be super careful. While there's nothing like power stropping, that thing wants to grab your knife. A light, light touch please.

Re: Are We Witnessing The Death Knell of K390 In Production Folders?

The irony is there's a plethora of Wharnie-ish knives hitting the market from other manufacturers. Of course many are more of a Seax/reverse tanto blade shape than a Wharnie. I hope Spyderco is just biding their time to reintroduce some.

Oh man. I'll need to look at my Delica collection. I know I have an extra K390 Wharnie Delica somewhere....

Re: Are We Witnessing The Death Knell of K390 In Production Folders?

Regarding the wharnie blade shape. I very much like the shape on the Delica. But in looking at the other Seki Wharnie blades in the Endela and Endura sizes.... yuck. Those definitely are aesthetically a miss for me.

Re: Community Sharpening Journal

Most of my waterstones are King or Shapton Kuromaku's with a few Naniwa's thrown in. Just curious how hard they are and how long they last. I figure I'd use it more for chisel or plane blades than anything else.

Quick question: anyone out there try Pride Abrasives water stones? Saw my local Woodcraft now carries them. I'd be interested in anyone's experience.

Very interested in this project Dan and you're results. And anyone who thinks there's controversy in sharpening knives has never hung out on a razor sharpening forum.

Re: A look at the Calypso Sprint

Loved JD's post from 10 years ago. Made me chuckle. I agree with one of the posts that identified the swedge as the thing that really added elegance to the design. Not sure we're going to see a lot of that anymore out of the Japanese makers in the future.

Re: Thoughts on s90v

The Native 5 is available in S90V with the sweet CF scales. There was also a sprint run of the N5 LW in S90v (scales were a sky blue, takes to RIT dye very well).
