The female leader of an elephant herd is the Matriarch. She is an older, wise female, whose job is overseeing the safety and well being of the herd. The Spyderco Matriarch Folder, like the matriarchal elephant, is a protector. It was created in the 1990s at the request of our South African distributor. During that time he was selling numerous self-defense knives to women in Johannesburg. The crime rate there had soared and to protect themselves and their families, his female clientele were requesting an easy-to-carry folder for self-defense, to avoid being victimized. We developed a smaller and lighter weight version of the Spyderco Civilian, called the Matriarch to fit the bill.
The original Civilian design came about as a request from a U.S. law enforcement agency. They were looking for a specialized Spyderco folder for their undercover agents who enter into situations and structures without carrying a sidearm, but where a knife is warranted. These agents were not formally trained in defensive knife techniques and the Civilian's patented reverse "S" blade affords effective cutting power with its SpyderEdge and ultrafine tip when adrenaline is running high.

MORE About the Matriarch2:
What makes the design unique is its reverse "S" shaped blade that is highly effective when cutting, using just the tip, or when using a full arm motion. The curvature of the blade sweeps into fine tip that passes easily through material much like a cat's claw but with the added ferocity of serrations.
Newly released is a Matriarch2. It uses the reverse "S" blade found on both the original Matriarch and on the Civilian, with a hollow-ground VG-10 blade, and has a thicker tip that is well suited to defense purposes as well as everyday carry. The FRN (fiberglass reinforced nylon) handle is the same as found on the Spyderco Endura4, an upgrade over the original Matriarch. Available in black, the injection molded handle has Bi-Directional Texturing™ for enhanced grip and a back lock with a David Boye Dent. A four-way pocket clip, screw together construction and phosphor-bronze washers make it convenient to carry, to open, cut with, and close.

WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL ABOUT STEEL?
The testing and use of new and exotic knife steels is a crucial part of Spyderco's product development. As new blade steels emerge The Spyderco R&D Test Lab is hard at work putting these steels through tough and unusual circumstances. Determining a steel's elementary make up, the most beneficial heat treat processes and edge geometry are just part of what it takes to make a blade a super-cutter. Many people are unaware Spyderco offers a product allowing steel enthusiasts (or even junkies) to try these steels out themselves in a rather interesting way. Read on……
Spyderco's Mule Team Project
What is a Mule?
In the English language the term mule has multiple definitions: There's the obvious equine reference being the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse. It can be a coin minted from two dies by mistake and the auto industry refers to test vehicles as a mules. Following the automotive industry Spyderco calls knife models designed and built for testing and evaluation, Mules. When a group of these are brought together they make a team of mules, thus the name of our Mule Team Project. Knife and steel-devotees appreciate trying out new blade steels. Spyderco is a leader in the industry offering, testing and manufacturing knives using new and exotic blade steels. Taking that idea a step up, why not offer a series (team) of blades using different, exotic and freshly unveiled steels? This offers a venue for steel-obsessed knife knuts to try, test and use, something normally not offered to the industry.
The Mule Team Knife
Spyderco's Mule Team is a single-piece fixed blade. The blade is leaf-shaped and comes with a sharpened and finished PlainEdge but with an unfinished handle providing a do-it-yourself opportunity. The unfinished handle has a series of holes for attaching a custom handle or cord wrap. All Mule Team Pieces are sold without handle scales or a carry sheath, focusing the project on the blade steel and opening the door for the owner to create his/her own handle scale and carry options.
What Mules has Spyderco made so far? What is coming?
We have released several variations using the same fixed blade pattern in an exotic steel. Each steel offering is limited to approximately 600 pieces and engraved to indicate the steel of each separate run. Variations are priced accordingly with the only cost variable being the steel itself. Now available are the MT09 and MT12. MT01-MT10 and MT11 are sold out. Look for MT13 coming on Monday, Feb 27 and MT14 coming later in 2012.
